Like so many non-profits dedicated to helping others, National Jewish Medical and Research Center - now National Jewish Health - was fortunate and proud to benefit from Governor Garrahy's support and advice as a recipient in 1977 of our Humanitarian Award in RI and for many years thereafter as a Trustee and Trustee Emeritus. To Auntie Marguerite, all my cousins and their families,
It is with deep sorrow that I sign this book for my uncle. As you all know, he truly was a great man and will sadly be missed as a part of our family! I am so glad I had the honor of his presence (as well as Auntie's) at my house in the summer of 2010 for Kristen's graduation. My friends were amazed that Governor Garrahy was at my house and that he was my uncle. They joked that they did not realize I had "famous" relatives. I enjoy all of the wonderful stories that people are telling about him. I can't believe that even the roof that my dad put "Garrahy for Governor" on left an impression on someone who wrote in. Of course that made Uncle Carl feel "special" too. One can only aspire to live their life with a portion of Uncle Joe's genuine kindness. Even though we do not get together much, he will truly be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time. I just want to say that his funeral felt like a dedication to his life and we were honored to be a part of such tribute for such a special person.

My sympathy to Governor Garrahy's family. I was in Florida and could not attend the funeral. My first assignment as a priest was at St Augustine's where Joe was a reader and John was the president of the altar boys. I played golf with Joe at Bear Lakes in Florida and occasionally met with Joe and Marguerite at church and social events. My prayers are with you.

Mr. Garrahy was a kind and gentle man. Genuine and unassuming, he treated everyone with great dignity. He had a special way of making those in his presence feel important - that is a God-given quality that Mr. Garrahy certainly honored. God Bless Mr. Garrahy and may his family find comfort in their lifetime of precious memories.

Governor Garrahy was the best governor this state had. Our condolences in your time of sorrow and grief.
February 2, 2012
Dear Mrs. Garrahy,
At this time of tremendous grief, I'd like to share a personal story that may make you smile.
Back in the 60's (?), The Governor worked at my uncle Charlie's grocery store, Mike's Reliable Market,on Smith Street which is now Patrick's Pub. It is there where he met my Aunt Ana Kanarian.
I was a marginal student in high school and upon graduating LaSalle in 1977, was wait listed to get into Providence College. It was then that my Aunt contacted the Governor who wrote a letter of recommendation allowing me to be accepted. A solid 3.00 GPA followed and as a result, I have since enjoyed a successful business career.
Currently, I am the Clerk of Providence's Municipal Court and about 6 months ago, was told that Governor Garrahy was on the phone wanting to speak with me. Seems he received a summons for a ticket belonging to someone else with the same plate number. Of course, I corrected the matter and just approx. 2 months ago, he called again with the same issue. It was then that I had the opportunity to thank him , 35 years later, for all that he did and wish him a nice winter in Florida.
I will always be grateful and never forget his help as it helped to define my life. On a different subject, I remember very fondly your famous blueberry muffins that were so popular at Jordan Marsh. My mother used to make them all the time and it was always a treat to have "Mrs. Garrahy's blueberry muffins".
Please accept my sincere condolences and prayer's on the loss of such a wonderful man.

To the Garrahy Family, below is an email message I sent to many of my Christian brothers who look for inspiration to be the men God wants us to be. Governor Garrahy was a source of inspiration. Thank you for sharing him with all Rhode Islanders - Our prayers are with you as grieve his passing.
Sincerely, Jim Nooney
"Friends and fellow Rhode Islanders –
Former RI Governor Joe Garrahy past from this life last week. His funeral is tomorrow. I had the opportunity to meet him and speak with him on a few occasions. If you can spare me a minute, I'd like to pass on a word about Governor Garrahy in his honor.
Living in this tiny state of Rhode Island, you are never too far away from well known public figures. I had the opportunity to play a round of golf a few years ago with Governor Garrahy. It was an interesting experience. Although he'd been out of office for years, he was still the “Governor” in the minds of those around him. There was a reason for that respect and it wasn't his pure white hair and tall stature. During the round, I observed a man who was exceedingly gracious, humble and kind. He was interested in what everyone in the group had to say. He asked questions and was sincerely interested in the answer. Not for 1 or 2 holes, for all 18. In other settings I witnessed the same man, consistently gracious and humble. It wasn't just polish, it was sincere. There's a difference.
It's rare today to witness and know men like Joe Garrahy. Why? Maybe it's the beginning of the end of last of the “greatest generation”. Joe grew up during a time when almost no one had much materially, where hard work, honor, integrity, service and respect where the most important goals in life. But Interestingly, there was more to Joe Garrahy. My father, Dick Nooney, had the privilege of getting to know Joe over the past 25 years thru his friendship with Ed Garrahy, Joe's brother. Any of you who play golf know that walking or riding a golf course is a great opportunity to get to know someone. Sometimes you might even get to see someone's true character. Dick had the opportunity to play many rounds of golf with Governor Garrahy. During those moments on the golf course he took the opportunity to talk to Joe about matters far more important and meaningful than golf. On many occasions Dick shared his faith in Christ with Joe. As it turned out, Joe accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior thru his Catholic church, read the bible and prayed for his family, our state and the nation. Governor Garrahy was a born again, redeemed and transformed follower of Jesus Christ. No doubt about it. As his life is celebrated tomorrow, we can also rejoice that he is in heaven.
I have a steep climb, but I aspire to be the kind of gentlemen that Governor Garrahy was because he was following Jesus Christ and for that reason will be known as a “true” gentlemen."

To The Garrahy Family, We would like to express our deepest sympathy to all the family. I was only a kid when Governor Garrahy, did the impossible. He stood by us through the worst blizzard ever. That being 1978, and he made more Rhode Islanders come together as one. Something we very rarely see today. He stood by us, and now we stand by him to his new life in Heaven. I as my family will miss him dearly, and we can only say, remember the wonderful memories that Joe gave us. A regular man, performing a very large job to keep man together. We Love You, and RIP.................

Governor Garrahy was an exceptional man. He was truly a gentleman's gentleman who exuded a great deal of respect and dignity. He set the standard for what a Governor can and should be, unfortunately only a few have followed his footsteps. Rhode Island has lost a wonderful man and a real friend. Often called the great compromiser he had a way about him that brought consensus even in the most difficult times. His kind is a great loss to the state and he will be sadly missed. Rest in Peace Joe Garrahy, you have served your family and state us well.

I am sorry for your loss, of such a wonderful man. I was 8 years old when he was governor, and I remember my Dad driving me down Killingly street in Johnston every Sunday morning, and there was a large white house, and on top of the roof was Garrahy's name across the roof top in white letters, as I remember clearly, and I asked my Dad one morning why his name was printed on the roof, and who he was...and my Dad said..."He is our Governor and an honest man at that"...my Dad worked for the state of RI for 24 years, until his passing, in 1999. I will always remember that memory of Governor Garrahy and how my Dad always admired him and treated the workers fairly and respectfully. Now in my 40's, I can say he MUST have been the best Governor we ever had! So sorry for your loss.

A few years afer we departed from R.I. broadcasting...I was in Ireland with 7 golfing buddies...and after playing a round of golf at Lahinch...we drove to the nearby town and discovered some of
the Gov's relatives at a pub. The relatives proudly displayed the Gov's photo on the bar...and reminisced our meetings with Gov. Garrahy.
The loss of a great guy is felt here in Mississippi this week.
Sincerely,
Ron Hickman

Marguerite and Family, there are few people on this planet that can match up to the Governor for his quality of character. You are all carrying on his life's torch in the way he would wish. Our sincere condolences.
