Nikolaj Sanscharowski Obituary
"Nick" "Pepaw"
A longtime resident of the Horseheads community passed away unexpectedly on Fri. Feb. 14, 2014 at his Horseheads home at the age of 80. Born on Dec. 12, 1933 in Kharkov, Ukraine, Nick was the son of the late Fedor & Natalia Sanscharowskiy. He immigrated to this country in 1950 and was very proud to be an American. Nick married Walentyna Kozielski on May 16, 1955. He was employed by Artistic Greetings for many years and proudly was employed by the A&P Plant from its opening to closing. His interests included his passion for woodworking, cooking and daily walks at Thorne St. Park feeding his "duckies" and talking with friends. He was a communicant of Holy Trinity Orthodox Christian Church, Elmira Heights where he had been very active in past years. Surviving is his loving daughter, Elena (Kenny Ham with son, Darius) Russell, Pine City; three grandchildren who were the loves of his life and were a great source of pride for him, Jessica Burgos, Rebecca Russell and Christopher Russell; great grandson, Jacobi "Big Boy"; siblings, Michael (Jeanne) Sanscharowskiy, Horseheads, Alex Sans, Cleveland, OH; Nena Sanscharowskiy, Horseheads, Vera (John) Morich, Elmira Heights; brothers-in-law, Victor and Anatoli Kozielski and Frank Sweet; nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved son, Victor in 1979; brother, Anatoli Sanscharowskiy; sister, Zena Sweet; sister-in-law, Tamara Kozielski; and brother-in-law, Borys Kozielski. Family and friends will be received at Caywood's Funeral Home & Gardens, 1126 Broadway, Southport/Elmira on Thur. Feb 20, 2014 from 11 am - 1 pm. Funeral services will follow at 1 pm with graveside services in Woodlawn Cemetery where he will rest beside his beloved, "Valia". Memorial donations may be directed to Paradise Garden Animal Haven 598 Kent Hill Rd. Woodhull, NY 14898 in his memory.

The first time we met Nick was when he would sell Girl Scout Cookies door to door with his grandchildren of whom he was so proud of. Fond memories of him riding his bike, taking his strolls and feeding his "nature friends" around the Thorne Street neighborhood he will be missed. May he always be in your hearts.

I did not know him...but I did know his granddaughter Jessica & great grandson Jacobi...Seeing Jessica speak of him - you could tell that he was a wonderful man.
