Patrick LaVelle Obituary
"PJ"
Age 48, died very unexpectedly Wednesday, September 17, 2008. PJ was born October 5, 1959, a son of Kay Atkinson LaVelle and the late Lawrence J. LaVelle. In addition to his father he is predeceased by his mother-in-law Ann M. O'Neil, aunt Mary Marr, and grandparents. Along with his mother PJ is survived by his loving wife, and best friend, Susan Gush LaVelle; daughter Taylor Ann LaVelle; brothers and sister-in-law, Joseph M. and Susan LaVelle of Wellsburg, Jeffrey W. LaVelle of Queen Creek, AZ, Michael J. LaVelle of Daytona Beach, FL; sister-in-law Kathryn Lynough of Elmira; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, F. James and Anne Gush of Dallas, TX, Michael Gush of Elmira, Kevin Gush of Sarasota, FL; father-in-law Frank Gush, with his wife Patricia, of Elmira; nieces and nephews, James and Erin LaVelle, Alyssa and Sean Lynough, Jordan Gush, Stephanie Kulp; aunts and uncles, Jeane LaVelle, James and Marla Gannon, Roger and Joan O'Neil, Linda and Richard Crawford; step father-in-law Dr. Daniel Fisher of Elmira, with his children, Paul, Daniel and Amy; along with many good friends. PJ graduated from Southside High School in 1978. He was employed as a Corrections Officer at the Elmira Correctional Facility. PJ enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson and all sports. He was an avid golfer and a big fan of both the New York Yankees and Dallas Cowboys. Up until the last few years he was an active basketball referee and softball umpire. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, Elmira. Most important, though, PJ's greatest love, and joy, was the time spent with Susan and Taylor Ann. He will be forever loved and missed. Friends are invited to McInerny Funeral Home, corner of Water and Walnut Sts., on Sunday, September 21, 2008 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, September 22, 2008 at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Church. Interment will follow at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. Donations in PJ's memory may be directed to The Taylor LaVelle Education Fund, c/o Kay LaVelle, 874 Holdridge Street, Elmira, NY 14904.

Dear Lavelle and Gush families,

Although I left Elmira, I thought of the old gang often,(PJ,Danny Hughes, Billy Hughes, Timmy Cook, Russ King, Joe Devon), this group of guys will be with forever remembered, especially PJ, with his infectious smile and laugh. Having lost my father this year, I can completely understand the loss of a family member. I didn't know PJ personally, but I knew his younger brother, Michael and his grandma (from Hathorne Court in the early 70's - aka the bubble gum lady) My husband, Paul, was a referee and knew him. Growing up with PJ on the Southside provided me with life long memories which I will always cherish. Susan, Taylor, Kay, All of the LaVelle family and Gush Family, we are so sorrowful over PJ's passing. "Peeeej" was a light in everyone's lives. He could always bring a smile to your face. His genuine spirit will live on in our hearts. The ceremony yesterday at St Marys was one to be proud of. I just felt so proud. It was, by far, the nicest funeral I have ever attended. Joe LaVelle and Kevin Gush both did such a wonderful job and Joe was so right about PJ always smiling. God Bless You PJ and watch over us down here. As if I wasn't stunned enough with my mother's sudden passing the day before PJ, then hearing of PJ's passing on last Wednesday was simply unbelievable. The funeral today was absolutely beautiful and a great tribute to the man that he was. May you find comfort in knowing that others are supporting you and PJ with our prayers. I found some comfort in knowing that as you laid PJ to rest today and I, my mom, that the two of them kept each other company along the way.

Although we drifted apart with our families , he was such a good friend that when we would see each other , there was no "catching up" , it was as if we saw each other every day. I will always remember and cherish the wonderful times PJ, myself, and many others experienced while @ Broadway Junior High. Even then at the young ages of 12,13, & 14, PJ was a person that you wanted to be associated with , pretty much because it always just seemed like you had something in common.
