Kies, Richard Leon

Richard Leon Kies, age 63, of Painted Post, passed away on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at home. Richard was born on December 17, 1950 in Corning, NY, son of the late Benjamin and Alice (Whitford) Kies. He married Adele Rieppel on Canandaigua Lake on August 29, 2003. She survives him. Richard graduated from East High School in Corning, class of 1969. He served in the U.S. Air Force as an air traffic controller from 1970 to 1974. He was employed by Corning, Inc. as a machinist for almost forty years, retiring in 2010. Richard was a member of the Corning American Legion and Corning Elks Club. He was an active member and on the board of trustees at Grace United Methodist Church. He enjoyed bowling, golf, volleyball and coin collecting. He traveled with his wife Adele to many nature and hiking spots, and also to visit his daughters. Richard was loved by everyone who knew him, and was kind, considerate and helpful to all who met him. Richard was a devoted father with a special place in his heart for his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife: Adele Rieppel Kies and three daughters: Angela Kies of San Diego, CA, Amy (Joshua) Billings of Smyrna, DE, Anita (Keith) Lachut of Baton Rouge, LA; two sisters: Patricia A. Edger of Corning, NY, Gail M. (Dan Towns) McIntyre of Elmira, NY; step-sons: Michael (Lisa) Saurbaugh of Bath, NY, Jeffrey (Kamie) Saurbaugh of Painted Post, NY, and Bryon (Martha) LaChance of Rochester, NY; grandchildren: Pierce and Alice Lachut, Lauren, Julia, Benjamin, Lucas and Anna Saurbaugh, Evan and Brett LaChance; brother-in-law: David Walker; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother and father and sister, Tina Walker. Friends will be received on Friday June 13 from 9:00AM to 11:00AM at Carpenter's Funeral Home LLC, 14 East Pulteney Street in Corning. A memorial service will follow at 12:00PM at Grace United Methodist Church, 191 Bridge Street in Corning. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be directed to the Endowment Fund, c/o Grace United Methodist Church, 191Bridge St., Corning 14830.
