Steven Bennett Obituary
Was born May 31, 1953 in Elmira, NY the son of the late Edward and Betty (Wertman) Bennett, passed away on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at St. Joseph's Hospital at the age of 61. He is survived by his loving daughter, Nytosha Bennett of Elmira, NY; siblings: Roger (Teri) Bennett of Atlanta, GA; Regina (Robert) Mansfield of AZ; Mary Ann Bennett (Brad Beaver) of Nashville, TN; uncle, Gene Bennett of Erin, NY; along with several nieces and nephews. Steve was the Commander of the American Legion Post # 154 Elmira Heights, NY, the past President of the Men's Auxiliary at the Rex Field VFW Post # 901 Elmira, NY and was a member of the Chemung County Veteran's Honor Squad. Family and friends are invited to attend Graveside Services for Steve at the Woodlawn National Cemetery 1826 Davis St., Elmira on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at 2:00 PM. Chaplin Harold Wacenske of Post # 154 will officiate. The Chemung County Veteran's Honor Squad will accord Military Honor's for their brother. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be directed to the Rex Field VFW Post # 901 113 Keefe Street Elmira, NY 14904 in his memory. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Elmira/Southport, NY 14904. Steve's guestbook may be signed in obituaries at www.olthof.com

Steve was an awesome person and the kind that would give the shirt off his back if he thought it would help someone out. There are no words to express the sorrow at the loss of such a good person. All the great memories of all the fun times that we all shared will fill all our hearts to help us through this sad time. All I can say is that Heaven must have needed another Angel to have taken such a great person. RIP Steve. My deepest condolences to all his family and friends (who considered him more family than they did a friend). You will be greatly missed by all.

I met Steve at Keefe's & had some good times with him on Souse Mt. as well, After talking to Steve once I found out he used to sell insurance to my parents. It's a small world, but Heaven is a very large & wonderful place, so enjoy yourself, Steve.

Steve was very instrumental in the birth of our local Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter, #803 as well as the portion of the Chemung County Honor Guard associated with it. He gave an awful lot of himself to both organizations. He will be missed. Rest in peace my brother in arms.

To Nytosha and Family - Steve was a kind and decent man, who spent a lot of his free time helping other families in honoring the loss of a Veteran. When he wasn't attending a funeral service, he was out in his boat, or sitting at the local VFW having a cold one. I always looked forward to seeing him there. I met Steve when he moved into the apartment below me, and the entire time we lived there, I could count on Steve to look out for our house, and for me. It was like having a big brother right downstairs. "Rest in Peace Steve Bennett. There is no doubt in my mind that you are flying amongst the angels!" God Bless,
