Lucious Butt Obituary

Lucious Calvin (Cal) Butt died March 29 at Charter Senior Living of Annapolis. He was 92.

Cal was born November 18, 1932 at home in Perquimans County, Hertford, North Carolina to Lucious (Luke) Elexander Butt and Edith Hobbs Butt.

He attended New Hope Elementary School and Perquimans County High School. He graduated from East Caroline College with a BA in Science and Math. He earned a master's degree in electrical engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology.

He was married to the former Anne Rountree of Gates County, Hobbsville, North Carolina. He Is survived by two daughters, Catherine Griffiths and husband of Mechanic Falls, Maine and Jo Anne Cottrell and husband James of Elkridge, Maryland; four grandchildren, William and Richard Griffiths, Sara Cottrell and Erin Kelly; and 3 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his sister, Mary Butt Ownley of Hertford, North Carolina and Joseph Butt of Beallsville, Maryland.

Upon his graduation from East Carolina, Cal received a commission in the United States Air Force where he served for 26 years. He was a pilot in his early career, flying weather reconnaissance and tactical air refueling missions around the world. He later flew as forward air controller in Vietnam.

He served two tours of duty in the Pentagon, first on the Air Staff and subsequently in the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force. Cal was the recipient of various awards and decorations, among them the Legion of Merit (2), the Distinguished Flying Cross (2), the Bronze Star and the Air Medal (17).

After his retirement from the Air Force, he worked twelve years in industry with the General Electric Company and with The Analytic Science Company (TASCO).

He and Anne moved to Hurlock in 1992. He was a member of Unity Washington UMC, Reids Grove UMC and the Hurlock Lions Club.

Funeral services will be held at the Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market on April 7, 2025 at 12 noon

where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Lions Club Scholarship Fund, Hurlock Lions Club,

P. O. Box 456, Hurlock MD 21643.
