Albert Sawyer Obituary

ALBERT DAVID SAWYER

Albert David Sawyer, better known as AD, 73, died June 21, 2010 at Rex Healthcare Center in Raleigh.

He was born on May 28, 1937, to the late Christopher and Ruby Sawyer, in Maysville, NC. He was President of the 1956 senior class and graduated from New Bern High School after which he attended Chowan College. He served proudly in the United States Army. His career started at First Citizens Bank and later included being the President of the United Way of North Carolina. He retired in 1996.

He had served as the Senior Warden of The Church of the Good Shepherd in Raleigh. His greatest enjoyment and fulfillment was working at the Shepherd's Table Soup Kitchen. He met and became very good friends with people from all walks of life and thoroughly enjoyed talking to them.

He is survived by three sisters and one brother: Erma Zaytoun (Louie) of Dayton, Ohio, Dorothy Moore (Hilton) of Oxford, NC, Theresa Hill (John) of Newport, NC, and Chris Sawyer of New Bern, NC. He is also survived by his first priority, Moses, his blind dog, that he rescued from Hurricane Floyd. Moses went everywhere with AD including every church service at the Good Shepherd Church, out-of-town funerals, over-night visits, and grocery shopping .

He was preceded in death by three brothers: Oneal, Lawrence, and Frank Sawyer; one sister, Emily Lorraine Sawyer; and one nephew, Gregg Sawyer.

A Burial Office and Holy Eucharist will be celebrated in his memory on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at 2:00 pm at The Church of the Good Shepherd, 125 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC. Family will receive guests in the Shepherd's Hall following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Shepherd's Table Soup Kitchen, 121 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC 27603 or to The State Animal Response Team (S.A.R.T.), PO Box 33038, Raleigh, NC 27636-5212.

AD will be sorely missed by his family and friends and especially by all the canines in the Bellevue Community because, when he walked Moses four times a day, he also gave treats to all of his animal friends.

I thought the world of AD. My husband and I were lucky enough to live in his neighborhood for a short while and were always happy to see him and chat while he was out on one of his daily walks with Moses. He was a wonderful and kind person and a true gentleman. I am so sorry we have lost him. He will be missed and thought of fondly and often.

I knew Mr. Sawyer for only a few months, helping him manage his pain. He always greeted me at the door along with Moses and was just as concerned about what was going on in my life as his own life. I looked forward to my visits with him. He warmed my heart and I felt that I always got more out of our visits than he did. I was very saddened to hear about his passing and I will miss his warm generous heart.

I didn't know Mr. Sawyer, but after reading about him and his dog Moses I wanted to express to your family my condolences for your loss. It is obvious by the devotion and love that he gave his dog and other community dogs that he was a very kind and loving man. My thoughts are with you.

I have known Mr. Sawyer for many years, helping him manage his diabetes. He always was smiling and upbeat no matter what. He always asked about my kids and pets. He was truly a good friend besides being my patient. He will be missed and I am saddened by his passing.
