Ian Smith Obituary

IAN SMITH

A four year battle with cancer ended on March 30, 2011, when Ian died peacefully in his own home. Two celebrations of his life will be held at a future time to be announced later; one in Sneads Ferry, NC and one in New Jersey, where he lived for thirty-two years.

Born in England in 1928, Ian and his wife, Sylvia met in kindergarten when they were five years old, a friendship that culminated in a wonderful sixty year marriage. He will be remembered by many for his piano playing, Jazz recordings, wonderful sense of humor and his intellect. An electrical engineer, Ian moved with his family from England to the United States in 1960. He was a much respected and loved man who enjoyed yachting all his life. He was a member of the Free Masons in England for sixty years, and a member of the Toms River Yacht Club in New Jersey for thirty years.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; son, Clive and his wife, Cheryl; daughter, Ruth and her husband, George; two grandsons, Christopher and his wife, Amanda and Bryan and his wife, Allison; three step grandchildren, George and his wife, Jackie, Greg and his wife, Kittaya and Larysa and her husband, Chris; six great-grandchildren, Kai, Ian, Abigail, Brady, Alex and Ava; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law in England and many nephews and nieces, also in England.

Loved and admired by all who knew him, he will be missed for his great company, sense of humor, plus his many talents. He blessed us all with his love and will be missed always.
