PRESTON NEWTON Obituary

PRESTON HOWSER NEWTON 86, passed away on January 22, 2014. Born in Leesburg, Va., he moved to Fairfax in 1968 and retired to Wilmington, NC in 1990. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He attended George Washington University. A civil engineer, he planned and designed roads, including the expansion of the Capital Beltway and I-66. He was presented the Onthank Award in 1970, which is the highest honor given by Fairfax County to its employees. He had a strong passion for all sports, but mainly baseball. He played in the adult Loudoun County, Va. League for Leesburg and Ashburn, from the 1940s - 1960s. He also coached and umpired Little League Baseball. He was a member of First Baptist Church Wilmington and the Lions Club, where he was named Lion of the Year in 1994-95. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty; their sons David (Robin), Kevin (Barbie), and Bruce (Kathy); and 8 grandchildren (Mark, Hunter, Wyatt, Connor, Brady, Tatum, Brooke, and Brett). He is also survived by three brothers (Claude, William and Virgil) and one sister (Frances). Inurnment at the University of Richmond will be private. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date in Wilmington. Please consider a donation to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Association.
