I was in a science class for elementary teacher in the early 70's. I learned that the liked to hunt and invited him to our farm. He came many time, not always to hunt, but the walk the fields and enjoy the the country side. He was a great teacher and in my case also a friend.

Rolla Nelson was a good man and a dedicated teacher. I recall Rolla donating to the Cape Fear Museum a small steam engine hand-built by a World War II German prisoner of war who was interned in Wilmington. Rolla and I not only shared of love of science as physics professors at UNCW, but also our faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ.

My sincere condolences to Rolla's family.
Rolla taught me Physics at, then, Wilmington College, back in the early 60's.
After graduation, I taught Physics for many years in the Community College system, and I tried to be the type of Instructor that Rolla was.
I truly enjoyed the classes, and I always thought of Rolla not only as an Instructor, but also as a friend!
Rest In Peace, Rolla.
