Patricia and I will always remember the gift that Shirley Moss was to us in the time that I served as pastor of Pine Valley UMC. Her spirit was glorious- loving, supportive, generous. Knowing what life was like as a pastor's wife she and Patricia had many conversations about both the joys and the struggles of being in that role. How I enjoyed the visits that Shirley and I had in her home. Always welcoming, she did not expect me to visit but always made me feel as if my visit had made her day.
Perhaps the most special gift Shirley gave to us was the attention she paid to our daughter AnaAustin. Not that gift giving was expected or the most important sign of her caring but at Christmas and at our daughter's birthday Shirley would always have a very special, unique gift for her. The one we remember most was a beautifully decorated box filled with six small, colorful Mayan "worry dolls." The tradition associated with these dolls is that people who cannot sleep because of worry are to tell the doll the reason for worry then place the doll under their pillow before going to sleep. The doll worries in that person's place so that the person might sleep peacefully through the night and awaken knowing that the doll had taken away that worry during the night. In the midst of the stresses of middle school AnaAustin used the worry dolls a great deal, and came to believe that they did indeed make a huge difference. In fact, she still has that box of dolls with her for the stresses of student life at UNC-Chapel Hill!
We are so thankful to God for the love and grace Shirley Moss brought to our lives. What a blessing she was!

Dear Sondra and family,
I seen your Mother's obituary in the newspaper this morning. I wil always remember visiting your Grandmother (Aunt Mattie) and Grandfather (Uncle Leonard) and your Mom and Dad at Harwood, WV. Your Dad and my Dad joined the Boomer Methodist Church at the same time. I have a group picture taken of you and me and other children at the Church. Prayers and love to you and family.
