Barbara Mollenhauer Obituary

Barbara Ann Mollenhauer of Austin, aged 94, passed away peacefully March 1st, 2024 at her apartment in the Longhorn Village retirement community. She was a wonderful and caring wife, mother, and grandmother to her family. Barbara was born in Austin on November 24th, 1929, and lived a full life. She graduated from Austin High School as valedictorian and continued her education at the University of Texas, receiving a B.A. in Bacteriology in 1951. While attending folk- and square-dancing events at the university, Barbara met her husband, Hilton, who also attended the university and worked in the biological research field. When not conducting laboratory work in bacteriology, Barbara enjoyed traveling with her husband both in the US and abroad, even spending 6-months in Europe before their first child was born in 1962. Barbara and Hilton were the parents of 3 boys, Paul, John, and David. Her love of academics inspired her children who all earned graduate degrees in engineering fields. After her sons went to college, Barbara continued her career in laboratory research, co-authoring 5 academic papers. In 2009, Barbara and Hilton retired from working and moved to the Longhorn Village community in Austin. Barbara's middle son passed away in 2000 and her beloved Hilton died in 2021. She is survived by Paul, David, and her 3 grandchildren Dayna, Michael, and Meredith. Barbara was a member of the Saint John's United Methodist Church in Austin where a memorial service will be held celebrating her life on April 13th at 1PM, followed by a reception. It is open to the public or can be live streamed at stjohnsaustin.org/live. Instead of flowers, donations can be made to Saint John's United Methodist Church or the Humane Society.
