Broadus was a gentleman in every essence of the word, and the good Lord broke the mold when he made him. My family and I loved him very much, and will miss him.

I feel very fortunate to count myself among the 200+ law clerks that Broadus mentored during his career. I was also lucky, later in life, to try a case with him. He was the quintessential "happy warrior" -- he fought like hell for his clients, but he always did it with a smile on his face. He taught me a lot and I will miss him.

I have very fond memories of Mr. Spivey when I was growing up. My father always held such a respect for him. So did I. He was a legend in many ways but what I remember most is how he always made those around him smile. He always had a kind word or a funny joke to share. The last time I had the privilege of spending time with Mr. Spivey was a long time ago, but he definitely made an impact. He was a truly gifted individual and it is a great loss to the law community of Texas. My thoughts are with the family during this time. He will be greatly missed.

I first met Broadus in 1984 and consider myself very fortunate to have been one of his 200 clerks. He was a mentor and a friend and was a shining example to me of how to treat people.
I was visiting the National Cathedral in Washington, DC in 1985 and stone block in one of the walls in which was carved the following:
Kindness was his creed
Charity was his religion,and
Justice was his most eagerly sought objective.
I have no idea who they were talking about, but I thought this perfectly described BAS.
I consider myself very fortunate to have known him. This world was a better place with him in it. He will be so missed by so many.

I first met Broadus through his son Danny, in 1967 or 68. We were driving to eat at Little Italy in Lubbock. He attempted to explain stocks to us by using the example of a "mini bike company" since he knew Danny and I were interested in mini bikes. The teaching about stocks quickly devolved into our interest in starting a mini bike company. We never did that, but Danny and I did get mini bikes.
In 1983 I clerked for him and more recently I had the pleasure of working with Broadus on a few legal matters. A truly unique teacher with a since of interest and caring for all!

If you see Bob Huff around will you ask him what he wanted that ball of yarn for at that trial in Lubbock?
He was one of a kind.

Wow- One of 200 law clerks (one of a very few publicly identified Republicans). Sometime janitor for office. 1 time Client. Co-Counsel and occassional opposing counsel. He was a mentor thru all of it. Many lessons learned from this West Texas giant. What a life well lived. We will miss you here.

When i heard about Broadus passing away i was so shocked and very saddened. I thought he would live forever!!! He was just that kind of person. The kindness of the kindness and such a wonderful person. I remember Broadus every morning when i would be heading to work at Cisco's he would be sitting in his car, i would walk by his car and say broadus why are you sitting in your car just go on in, he would say no they aren't open yet. He knew he could come in now. He would always go to the corner table in the front of the back dining room. . He sure did love his Migas!!! Not a mean bone in his body... I would sit there and talk to him while he ate his breakfast.
He loved his Texas longhorn football team. And loved life. Broadus meant so much to the Cisneros Family, Memories of you will always bring a smile, you're forever in our hearts until we meet again...May you rest in Peace.. My sincere condolences to you Ruthann and the rest of the Spivey family!! May God comfort you all.

Broadus was was of the funniest lawyers you could know.
Entwined in his trial lore was rolled
his fabulous humor .
He knew how to charm a jury.
He knew how to charm friends snd strangers.
He was so fun to be with.
Ruthann was also so fun to be with but together they were right at the top of the chain.
What a great and fun couple.
Our many IATL trips and trips to the Baldwin’s Florida topped everything.
We saw the world together.
What memories.
May all of you experience friends like the Spivey’s in your lives .
They were irresistible.
God bless you both.

I feel very pleased and fortunate to have known and, for a time during my years at UT Austin during the 1980's, to have had the chance to work for such a good man. He was an inspiration in so many ways for me and so many others. Certainly he treated me and my family with every possible kindness and generosity. My sisters Marian, Pat and I at one time felt he was running a sort of work/scholarship fund for the entire Blanchard clan. I'll always be thankful to him for that.
I know I'm not alone in describing Broadus as a kind, unassuming, ridiculously intelligent man and a passionate, tireless defender of the little guy as well as, personally speaking, the closest thing to Atticus Finch I've ever met. So I'm truly very sorry to hear of his passing and my heart goes out to Ruth Ann and all the Spivey family as well as to Dicky Griggs, his longtime law partner.
As the Irish say, we'll not see his like again and God knows he'll be truly missed.

Broadus taught me how to be a lawyer, and how to think like an advocate. He was a great teacher, and I still think of myself as his student (over 40 years later).

"You know what I'm proudest of after graduating from law school? Nobody ever again asked me about my grades."
I was one of the 200 clerks. 1984. He was a good boss who helped me decide I didn't want to practice law. If I didn't enjoy it doing "God's work" with these great guys - Broadus, Dicky, Paul, Pat, and Andy - I wasn't meant to work as a lawyer. Thank you, Broadus. You made a difference.

Broadus was a dear and forever friend. Never did he put himself first! He was always there for support and love. They “broke the mold” with Broadus and his wife, Ruth Ann. She is and was my dearest friend. Broadus will be a cherished memory for me and my family. He will be cherished above as well!

He was a dear friend and taught me more about law practice than anyone can imagine. I introduced him to Dicky Grigg and that changed both their lives for the better. He coached me on my first civil jury trial, making me write down on a legal pad “objections” to use during the trial. A few of the objections did not fit the evidence being presented and the judge seemed amused and bewildered. But, after winning Broadus told me “nothing else matters”. He had a big impact on my life and was truly “one of a kind”. RIP

Broadus was one of my favorite people on the planet. I worked for him and learned more from Broadus than in my entire legal assistant career. He was smart, witty, generous, and kind. Will remember fondly early morning meetings at Ciscos. Dottie Mathews

I had the distinct pleasure of working with Broadus for almost my entire legal career. There's no question that Broadus made me a better lawyer, but, more importantly, he made me a better human being. He was a good friend and he'll be missed.
