Darwin NELSON Obituary

NELSON, Darwin Bruce
Darwin Bruce Nelson, 74 of Corpus Christi, Texas passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 26, 2017.

Darwin was born on December 29, 1942 in Fentress, Texas to Renold Stedman Nelson and Laverne Merle "Pat" Baker. Darwin's two sisters, Ann Nelson Leamon and Laurie Nelson Stafford, are of Davis, California and his brother Alan Arnold is of Fentress, Texas.

Darwin grew up just outside Luling, Texas in McNeil on a small farm with his grandparents Charles and Erna Baker. He graduated from Luling High School in 1961, where he played on almost every varsity team in an effort to escape the farm, take hot showers, and spend time with friends Nathan Pierce and Gary Low. Darwin married his high school sweetheart Ellen Kaye Welch on July 6, 1962. Darwin earned a Bachelor's degree at the University of Corpus Christi, and his Masters and Doctorate at East Texas State University. Immediately after earning his PhD, Darwin accepted a position on the faculty at Mississippi State University. He returned to Texas when he accepted a position as the Director of the counseling Center at Texas A&I University in Kingsville. During his early career, he also taught classes, began a private practice in Corpus Christi, Texas and served as Director of the University Counseling Center at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. In 1977, Darwin began working professionally with Gary Low in Corpus Christi, Texas, where they authored books, articles, and assessment instruments that are used worldwide in education, training, and teaching. Darwin and Gary worked collaboratively with educators, organizations, and colleges in an effort to build healthy students, people, organizations, and communities. Darwin also established the Personal/Life Skills Center in Corpus Christi, where he welcomed colleagues to consult, train, and practice.

Darwin was always busy and never went small into any endeavor. He was a dreamer and a doer, collecting old bottles, combing the beach, metal detecting, hunting arrow heads, throwing darts, growing bamboo, and carving wood. Darwin's love of bamboo is what led to the establishment of Nelson Bamboo Farm and the beginning of BambooTexas.com, a labor of love and bonding between Darwin and son John.

Darwin is survived by his wife Ellen Kaye Welch Nelson of Corpus Christi, Texas and his two sons Michael and John. Michael and Theresa Nelson reside in Hillsboro, Oregon and John and Wendy Nelson in Hockley, Texas. Michelle, Amy, Austin, and Carter are Darwin's grandchildren.

Visitation will be Monday, January 30th, at 9 a.m. at O'Bannon Funeral Home with a service following at 10:30. The O'Bannon Funeral Home is in Luling, Texas at 210 S. Laurel.

The family asks that you remember Darwin as they do, at the center of a circle of friends and family.

A most respected and admired professional colleague who became a dear friend. Darwin is remembered every day as I use what I learned from him, and when I walk by the bamboo talking stick with the carved owl, my spirit creature. With esteem and affection, margo

I was probably one of Dr. Nelson's first graduate students at Mississippi State University. He served on my Masters thesis committee, made a strong impact on my ability to be an effective counselor and teacher, and shared my love of collecting old bottles. I earned my doctorate degree from Memphis State University in educational psychology and retired from a 30 year career at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Dr. Nelson's contribution to the lives of his students continues to have ripple effects and will for decades to come. Teachers truly touch the future. I am sorry that I am just now learning of Dr. Nelson's passing; however, his influence and positive affect on so many lives, mine certainly, lives on.

Dr. Nelson was one of the first professors I had in the counseling program at CCSU (TAMU-CC). His knowledge, calm delivery, reassuring nature and genuine care for each individual he met was something I will always admire and strive to obtain. My husband, in talking with Dr. Nelson one day, was reminiscing wishing he could change the past and Dr. Nelson with his wisdom shared "I am sure you did your very best with the life tools you owned at that time of your life." How comforting from a gentleman we held in high esteem. We miss Dr. Nelson but his legacy lives on. God's blessings to the family! Mike and Patricia Hill

Dear Kaye, Michael, John, and Family,

No words can express my heartfelt sadness.
Darwin was larger than life and a true friend. His life touched so many. First in our family, with my husband Ray, long before we were married, with his love of old cars. Later, with me, as a doctoral student in Ed Leadership, we knew he cared about our success as his students--I didn't have words for my teaching style until having EI classes, training, workshops, and conferences with both him and Gary. He touched our kids' lives; my son Zach still knows him as the "Bamboo" guy from the visits to his Bayside bambo farm--Zach loved that place--it was peaceful to him--he is sad. I couldn't tell my daughter, Ila, yet--she is away at college and the news would be too painful.
All I can think is God must have needed Darwin to give the Angels advanced EI training and to model tranquility. In that, even though Darwin cannot be on earth physically now, his spiritual presence will always remain in the lives of his beloved family, in his love for bamboo growing, in his research contributions with Dr. Low, and in the many, many lives that he touched both as a counselor and as an educator in South Texas and in India.
May each of you find Peace in this time of great need. Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you. May God hold you in his arms.
Sent with love from your extended family,
Paula, Ray, Ila, & Zach Wallace

I live in the same community where Darwin lived. My 10 year old Grandson would go for walks, when he visited me, and would always head to Darwin's to see if he was in the garage working on his art work. Darwin called and complimented me on Evan being a polite young man. When Darwin met Evan he made him a tiki, drilled a hole, and put it on a piece of leather to wear around his neck. Evan's last visit he came home with a piece of bamboo and a file. They were friends! Needless to say he will be missed. What a great man! I am so sorry for your loss.
