David Michael Dickson

The sun set one last time for David Michael Dickson in Brenham, Texas on January 28, 2024. Dave was born May 4, 1953 in Chicago, Illinois and was the only child of Hazel L. and Jacob Dickson.

Growing up in Chicago he developed a passion for baseball and was a loyal Cubs fan, though you would often find him cheering for his southside White Sox too. When Dave was not watching baseball, collecting baseball cards, or corresponding with his favorite baseball players, he was playing baseball. His love of the diamond followed him through his time at Rich Central High School where he was a proud second baseman for the championship baseball team and built many of his lifelong friendships. It was during those teenage years that he also developed his other warm weather passion - golf.

Following high school Dave, along with one of his closest high school pals, moved to warmer and sunnier Texas to attend Southern Methodist University. He graduated from SMU in 1975 with a degree in Radio, TV and Film. He later attended the University of Texas to study meteorology when his broadcasting career transitioned from news reporter to weatherman.

Dave spent 30 years as a radio and TV broadcaster in Texas. He launched his career working in radio for WFAA in Dallas followed by KWHI-KTTX radio station in Brenham. Dave moved into TV news when he accepted a position at KBTX in Bryan, before working at stations in Beaumont, Austin, and Houston. While Dave thought early on that he wanted to be a sportscaster, and interviewed some of his biggest baseball idols, including Hank Aaron, he was offered a position as a weathercaster during his time at KVUE in Austin in the early 80's.

That position shaped the next 20 years of his career as a weatherman, including his time at the NBC Houston affiliate KPRC, as well as KRIV, and News8 Austin. Following his retirement from the media industry, he followed his passion of golf, working at the Golfsmith headquarters in Austin and a few summers at the Evergreen, CO golf course. He often smiled when sharing that his part-time job at the golf course was his best gig ever.

It was in broadcasting where Dave also found his brother and sisterhood of people. He cherished these friends and their many shared adventures and laughs over the years.

In 2005 Dave embarked on his biggest adventure when he married his love, Jennifer Carraway Dickson, under a beautiful Taos, New Mexico sky. Their nearly 19 years of marriage took them from Austin, to Washington DC, to the foothills in Evergreen, Colorado, and back to Brenham, where Dave boasted that he could finally return to playing golf year round. Dave's love of Texas and golf was almost as big as his love for Jennifer, their dogs, and his family. He also enjoyed spending his time traveling out West in their RV.

Dave leaves behind his wife, Jennifer Dickson, of Brenham Texas and his beloved dogs, Mimi and Bella; Brothers in law Dennis Koch and wife Hilary, Ronald Koch, and bonus sister in law Abby Doggett; Nephew and Godson, Kameron Wayne Koch, nephew Kyle Koch, and niece Kaitlyn Koch; his mother in law, Karen Kroll; father in law, Larry Koch and wife Sherrie; and extended family in Brenham and Conroe. Dave also leaves behind his greatly adored cousins in Minnesota and Arizona, including the Lenhardts, O'Connors, Waldraths, and Swansons. His cousins Christian O'Connor, William Lenhardt, and Goddaughter Grace Lenhardt were incredibly special to him. Dave was also blessed to have shared in many prayers and gracious kindness from his home caregiver, Geneva Kahli of Brenham. Dave was preceded in death by both of his parents.

A celebration of life is being planned in Austin closer to the start of the World Series. An open invitation is extended to family, friends, and former colleagues, with more details forthcoming.
