Yesterday was Dyric's 19th birthday (March 7, 2006). We put an announcement in the paper honoring our gift from God. It is hard to believe that 2 years have passed since Dyric went home to be with the Lord.
We miss Dyric and loved ones showed us how much they miss him too. We received phone calls from friends and family. A special "plant" was sent to my office from Sharon and Toni. Julia called and was obviously upset, but her love for Dyric came through loud and clear. Coach Scales came by with a picture of AJ, Dyric, Josh and Spencer, the dynamic relay team from AAU. What a joy it was to spend time with those who loved Dyric.
Mr. Burt and I went to Dyric's favorite restaurant for dinner. It felt good being in a place he loved.
On another note, the 2nd scholarship ($1,000) honoring Dyric was given out at the Big XII Conference on Black Student Government. This year a student from The University of Oklahoma (OU) was the recipient.
Dyric, your legacy lives on.
Love,
Mom

One year ago today, November 27, 2004, we celebrated Dyric's homegoing to be with the Lord. We miss him so much, but we know he had completed his purpose on this Earth. We want you to know how God has continually blessed us through each and everyone of you.
I received a phone call today from Chivas . Chivas is a wonderful friend and son. He loved Dyric so much and has enriched our lives daily. Chivas, we love you for what you do to keep Dyric a part of all our lives. I know Dyric is proud of you and keeps watch over you at Baylor.
AJ, we know how you suffer with the loss of your best friend. We were filled with joy to see that you shared your feelings in a recent article on the UT website. You know DBurt loves you!
Daniel, your prayers are always felt. I can't begin to thank you or your family for all the love you have shown us. Thanks fellas for keeping Dyric' memory present in our lives. We think of y'all often.
I wanted to call each of you today, but after talking with Chivas, I realized how hard today is for me. I hope you saw the handsome picture in the Statesman. I don't want us to ever forget the times we shared with Dyric. They were important to him and the work God had for him to do.
Dyric impacted so many of our lives and we want to say thanks to you for sharing in the memories.
We enjoy coming to the McNeil games and just breathing the air with you. It really means a lot.
God has seen to it that Dyric's memory lives on in so many ways. The annual Deerpark Middle School "Dyric Burt Outstanding 8th Grade Student Athlete Award" was presented May 16th at the athletic banquet and the first recipient of the Dyric Burt Outstanding Freshman of the Year Award was presented February 2005 at the annual Big XII Conference on Black Student Government.
Always remember that God will reward you for your loving deeds for others, strong faith, and being an inspiration of hope.
Love,
Mrs. Burt

While looking through some of Dyric's McNeil High School books/papers, I came across several short essays. I decided to put them on line in the hopes that his words might inspire someone just like Dyric did his entire life.

“HOW DIFFICULT TIMES TEACH US VALUABLE LESSONS.”
By Dyric Burt
Fall 2005 – McNeil High School
Did you know through difficult times, we become stronger people? During life you will always experience a difficult situation, but it’s just to see if you can handle it and make it positive. I think that cancer was my test from the Lord to see if I was strong enough to handle the situation.
It started when I began to get more tired on the basketball court, not being able to run because my windpipe began to close up. I then noticed I had a constant cough and major headaches. The last sign before I went to the doctor was my neck began to swell and I had lumps going up both sides.
This situation affected me tremendously because I had thoughts like “ Am I going to die? Are people going to look at me differently”? The main thing that affected me was the question, “Why is this happening to me?”
Throughout this difficult time, I have learned that I can now help someone else that may be in the same situation I am in. It also changed my approach to life- now I just take it day by day instead of worrying about the future.

Edmond and Brenda:
Its unfortunate that I didn't know Dyric as well as I would have liked to, but hearing all the comments about him gave me a good sense of the wonderful person he was.
You both have been a true example of strength and courage. I love you both very much.

Dyric, the very first thing that i must say to you is that you are definitely a "FIGHTER" you have been dealin with this for a long time now, but it's okay to let someone else take care of things for you, and thats exactly what the LORD did for you. you have a lot of people with broken hearts down here, and i know they cant wait to see that big smile once again. i know your smiling right now and looking down on your family and friends, im just glad your in a place where you don't have to hurt anymore. we all miss you!!

I met Dyric the frist two weeks of my freshman year. I was having a hard and Dyric came up to me in the hallway put his arm aroung me and said "now what class will i walk you to today my little sister?" (since then he always referred to me as heather my little sister.) For about the next two months he walked me to that class everyday. Dyric was such a special person. He was an inspiration to so many people and touched many peoples hearts. He may not be here physically but he will always live within us. We know that you are in a better place now and no longer will you have to suffer. I never could figure out why you were always smiling but now i know that you were making every moment the best it could be. You always kept a smile upon your face. You were such a strong person inside and out. You lived life to the fullest and made it the best you could. You always set such a great mood to the atmosphere aroud you. I will always look up to for everything you did. There was never a dull moment when it came to having you around. You will forever be in my heart! I send my love and prayers to the Burt Family, you raised such a beautiful person. with love from your little sister

Dyric, I can't believe you are gone. When I heard about it at Stony Point, I couldn't believe it! To Mr and Mrs Burt, You have raised one of the most wonderful children, dyric was such a sweetheart and he was always caring. I remember the first time I came to run with Elite, Dyric was one of the first people to speak to me, and it made me feel at home. I apperciate everything he has done for me, and its so hard to believe he's gone. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Dyric's Family. R.I.P Dyric Burt.

I've know Dyric since he was in the 6th grade and a little earlier the that. I know he was sick but he never showed signs of it to people. I guess he didn't want us to worry about him. To the burt family vevn though me and him didn't keep in touch as much as we used too, he still will be like a little brother to me and you guys are my other family. I am here for you guys whenever you need me. Just remember to always pray and know that he suffers no more. I love you guys.

when i hurd that DB had died all i could do is say wow. i mean i lost a great friend that showed me how to be a true person and not conform to the things around us. every day i would come to school seeing him with a smile on his face. i would always wonder what made him so happy, but now i know becuase he loved all of the friends and family he had and he loved the fact that he himself was strong to survive. ill never forget the day he bought my hat from me. he would always have it every day after that and well all i can say is DB we love you and your spirit is with us and you my friend well have fun up in heaven. say whats up to God for me and ill see you on the other side. DB will always have a place in our hearts. Much love Dyric Burt and thanks man for every thing youve done.

Brenda and Edmond,
God must reserve a special place in His heart for those parents who live to relinquish their child to His care. May He bless you in your sorrow. None of us can truly imagine the depth of your loss but I know that there are many, many people who pray for you and for Dyric, and savor the joy that he brought to his family, friends, and neighbors. Dyric touched so many in such a short time. Thanks be to God that we knew him.

Edmond and Brenda,
Deborah, Allison, Russell and I offer our continual prayers. At times like these we all need to call upon the Lord. I would like to offer that we do not know the answers and will not know until we meet our Savior. I Corinthians 13:12 captures this for us.
“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.”
May God bless and ease your hearts.

To the family and friends of Dyric Burt,
I had the pleasure of coaching Dyric as a freshman at McNeil H.S. He was a terrific young man, who was always a joy to be around. His positive energy radiated from him through his smile. I would like to extend my heartfelt condolances to his family. Dyric had a tremendous impact on not only his family and friends, but also on his teachers and coaches. We are all lucky to have known Dyric and to have learned from him.
Sincerely,

I remember our first day of school at Jollyville Elementary. I had never gone to pre-K, so this whole having your mom drop you off for the day having to listen to strangers was a little scary for me. I felt like such a loser when I saw that all the kids we playing with orange playdoh and here I was gripping my mom's hand crying for her to take me home. Then there was Dyric Burt..... at the round table, crying alone. My mom went to comfort him, telling him that I was scared too. She would be coming to have lunch with me and thought he would like to sit with us. He did, making that the first of many times we got to lean on eachother. From that day on, Dyric would become one of my closest friends. He was there for me when my brother was in the ICU, when my mom had her surgery, and so many times after that. Dryic will always have a special place in my heart, always seeing that big kool-aid smile that couldnt make you feel anything but joy. Mr. and Mrs. Burt i just want to thank you for raising such a sweet, respectful, tender-hearted young man. You will always be in my prayers. And to you Dryic Burt.... Even though your no longer next to me, I know you will continue to help protect and guide me through life. I love you Mister Dyric Burt.

On behalf of the Williams family I would like to send my condolesences to the Burt family. I was blessed and happy to have my chance to meet Dyric when my son Dorian started running track. Everytime I would see Dyric he would be eating cheetos and I would always tell him that he was going to turn into a cheeto. He always gave me a hug everytime he say me no matter what. Dorian and Dyric became really good friends when Elite went to nationals in Tennessee. If there's anything that I or my family can do for you please don't hesitate to ask. God Bless The Burt Family.

I've known Dyric since I was 6-years-old. I never would of thought that HE would pass away so soon. I guess God realized Heaven was missing an angel. Yes, we are mourning over his death, but what we should be doing is celebrating the life that he had and the time we got to spend with him. There was not a time that I saw him without a smile on his face. He was one of the funniest people I've ever met. He's also one of the most real people I've met. He's having the time of his life in Heaven right now and he deserves to have that great time. Some of us might think that all we have left are memories, but that's not true. His spirit will live on forever in every single one of us.

I am so glad to have had Dyric in my life. Having been one of the people he depended on for so many years as a friend and as a caretaker, I feel as though he was my own son. He brought joy to my life. As he and Stephen grew up together, it was a joy to see them change and prosper. I just knew that I would be babysitting their children. But Dyric lived a life that was full and I am sure that God allowed him to experience all that he could in what we that are left behind considered a short life. But he lived life to the fullest. To Edmond and Brenda, you are the best people that God could have given this child to and I know that you are thankful for what God gave you and the time. I have learned a lot being around you---especially at this time. You have shown me strength that I always have known you have and that is why I am glad that my son was able to spend his formative years be in your presence. He learned a lot from both of you and I hope that he will continue to learn a lot.
Love in Christ Jesus
