Gary Primich Obituary

There are generally two types of harmonica players: Ones who have amazing technique, and those who play with intense feeling. Gary Primich was both. The great blues player, whose appearances in Europe brought out harmonica aficionados in droves, died Sunday, ex-wife Tina Rosenzwieg confirmed. An announcement of his death was also posted on his Web site. He was 49. The cause of death has not been released.

Gary was the sweetest, smartest, hardest-working harp player in the world, said Rosenzwieg, who met Primich when they were students at the University of Indiana. Although the couple divorced after several years, they remained close.

A native of Gary, Ind., Primich moved to Austin in the mid-'80s after a single visit to Antone's. He formed the Mannish Boys with former Frank Zappa drummer Jimmy Carl Black but achieved his greatest success as a solo artist. His 1995 album "Mr. Freeze" was named one of the 20 best blues albums of the '90s by Chicago weekly New City. He recorded eight albums in all for such labels as Antone's, Black Top, Amazing and Flying Fish.

Although he was based in Austin the past two decades, Primich made most of his money playing overseas, as a solo artist or while touring with bands such as Omar and the Howlers. He had established himself all over the world as one of the most technically proficient harmonica players, said his friend and fellow harp-blower Ted Roddy. He wrote great instrumentals that leaned toward organ jazz. It was like Jimmy Smith, only on harmonica.

Funeral services are pending.

I went to Indiana University for one year only as a freshman. I missed my home in Maryland. All I wanted to do was to play music. I lived in Briscoe dormitory where I met a guitar player and a harmonica player who both wanted to play the blues which is what we did as often as possible. The harp player was Gary Primich. He had long hair and was a sweet, quite, unassuming guy and passionate about music. I used to joke that I met Gary from Gary (IN). Anyway, we played as often as we could, never leaving my dorm room. I left school at the end of that year and lost touch. I'm glad to know Gary followed his dream and touch so many with his music. With love Mark

I am late in finding out this news but certainly no less heartbroken for it. Gary Primich was an amazing harp player and I can't stand knowing that I will never get to see him play live again.

I introduced Gary's music to my little bro after seeing him live in Buffalo, NY at the Taproom. He was so inspired he picked up a mouth harp and began to play. It's 11 years later now and man, the kid can wail! He was crushed to learn of this loss.

I also introduced Gary's music to my father. He drives his wife nuts because he listens to Company Man nearly constantly. :) (She's more the smooth jazz type *shrug*). I have yet to break the news to him but as I do I think I'll hand him Mr. Freeze, wrapped up for Christmas.

My heart and prayers go out to his family as well as all those pups of his who are still waiting for him to come outside.

I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE TURNED ONTO GARY THROUGH A MUTUAL FRIEND MARK WENNER (NIGHTHAWKS) I HAVE ALWAYS FELT I OWED MARK BIG TIME EVER SINCE. I REMEMBER ONCE TELLING GARY BETWEEN SETS THAT I WAS GOING ON MY 13th MONTH OF LISTENING TO NOTHING BUT HIS MUSIC. NO TV, NO RADIO, JUST PRIMICH. OUR FAMILY IS VERY SAD BY THE LOSS OF SUCH A WONDERFUL HUMAN BEING. MY 6 YEAR OLD SON WHO GREW UP LISTING TO GARY'S MUSIC SAID IT BEST. '' DAD, GARY PRIMICH MIGHT BE GONE BUT WE STILL HAVE HIS MUSIC TO LISTEN TOO''. THE TOWN OF HANOVER, PA AND EVERYONE AT KCLINGERS TAVERN WOULD LIKE TO THANK GARY'S FAMILY FOR SHARING HIM WITH US. BEST WISHES, DAVE SAPORITO '' GARY PRIMICH FOREVER, FOREVER GARY PRIMICH''

Nobody can lay that wicked Chicago-style coloratura on swamp rock, delta and Piedmont blues, Texas swing, jazz and country the way Gary Primich did. He played with a rich, variegated tone and unfettered imagination--tone and imagination tempered only by first-rate musicianship. When I first heard him fronting the Mannish Boys(Club Hey-Hey, 1987), I was so blown away I almost couldn't introduce myself. I figured someone that good would have an ego like all outdoors. I could not have been more wrong.

Gary was a real sweet, real down-to-earth guy who could make a harmonica sound like nobody's business. He was also a very good friend.

I really appreciated the memorial given by Tina, the Primich family and Juke Logan as well as his many friends and band mates. It helped me process the loss of a great man.
Thank you.
My heart-felt condolences to all.

With Gary's passing, every harp player standing in line can take one step forward. They all fell in line behind Gary. Saw him many times at the Rhythym Room in Phoenix. Red Top, Knock Me A Kiss, Caravan, Chicago Blues....he did it all and did it flawlessly. Is it me or do harp players seem to go young? Gary say hello to William Clarke and Phoenix's own late great Dave Trippy.

I have been a long time admirer of Gary's work and what he brought to the Blues community worldwide. It's thanks to people like Gary (and his band mates) that the Blues maintains a presence amongst us. This goes with a price to pay and it seems Gary gave himself to the music he loved till the very end. I learnt harp with Gary (on a few brief occasions) as one of his biggest fans some years back. I send my most sincere condolences to his close friends (Temple, Jim and the rest of the band) as well as Tina...Gary will be missed but always remembered.

Sincerely,

Thank you Gary for making our lives richer by knowing you.The great music and entertainment you shared with us worldwide over the years will always be remembered. My wife, Linda and I always looked forward to your shows;you would always take time to say "hi,howya been?" and thank us for coming out.Intros'to songs, stories of life on the road, and banter with the crowd were often humorous to downright gut-busting funny.DOG HOUSE is my son's favorite song.We always howl together after "bad boy barking at the moon".He said "at least we know he will still be rockin on in heaven",wise words from an eleven year old.We will deeply miss you Gary, my prayer to God is:"Please take care of this one,he's special"amen.God bless you Gary,Rest in peace

I saw Gary play in California at JJ's in San Jose and at the Sonora Blues Festival. Both times I got to say hi and tell him what a great Harp player he was. Gary was as down to earth as they come, a very kind and funny guy. Weird, I was just listening to "Mr. Freeze" last Saturday, loving every minute and thinking of Gary. I play harp in a blues band from time to time and have gotten alot of mileage out of his version of "Let Me Go Home Wiskey". Rest in peace, beautiful bluesman, and thank you for all the great recordings. I send my deepest and sincere condolences to the Primich Family.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Gary or seeing him perform live, but I am a great fan of his music.

Over the years, I have had harp-playing discussions with alot of other harmonica players, and one question that frequently comes up is: Who would you like to
sound like ?

I usually answer that I would like to sound like a combination of a few players, and one of those harp
players is always Gary Primich.

I love his sound and songs... freshingly unique!

I made sure to buy all his CD's and
looked forward to buying his new ones.

I was deeply saddened at hearing of Gary's passing.
I took my lunchtime walk today listening to nothing
but Gary's music on my iPod, and looked up at the sky.

The sky is much bluer today with Gary up there.

God bless you Gary... and thank you so much for the
music and inspiration to always try and make better music.
