George SUTTON Obituary

SUTTON, Jr., George Edward George Edward Sutton Jr peacefully passed away on Wednesday, February 21 with his wife of 52 years, Nancy Sutton, and his 3 children by his side. Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend will be deeply missed but his contributions and impact on our lives will never be forgotten. George was deeply spiritual, thoughtful, wise, gentle, compassionate and curious. He had a beautiful artistic soul. He loved the outdoors and even walked a large part of the Appalachian trail. He enjoyed reading novels, attending arts & theatre events, and gardening. He attended his weekly Old Geezer dinner group for over 20 years, and was very involved in his church. He was dedicated to his art and was especially gifted in metal work. He was a writer, journalist and entrepreneur. Although he had a long and prestigious professional career holding various positions in Alabama, Tennessee, and Texas what was truly most important to him was his family. George was drafted in 1965 and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam war. One of Podge's greatest joys was spending time with his 6 grandchildren - whether texting, talking on FaceTime, traveling to visit them in Houston or Florida, or doing puzzles with his youngest during their Sunday visits. Most of all, he loved his "Tennessee girl". Since his retirement 10 years ago he was able to spend significant time with Nancy including taking the opportunity to do one of their favorite things - sitting at a booth, drinking coffee and talking like they did when they first started dating. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Sutton; his children Kathryn Cannone, Bryan Sutton and Dennis Sutton; his 6 grandchildren: Zachary, Alexander, William, Ava, Giorgia and Annamaria and two family pets Cheddar and Millie. He is also survived by his sister, Louise Dennis from Birmingham, Alabama. Visitation will be at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home located at 3125 N Lamar Blvd on Saturday, February 24 from 3:00-5:00 pm. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, February 25 at 2:00 pm at University United Methodist Church, 2409 Guadalupe Street. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Austin Pets Alive, UUMC Open Door or to the Austin Leukemia And Lymphoma Society. Sandy and I were deeply saddened to learn of George's death. I'd seen him only a few weeks ago at UUMC. George had a quiet, calm quality and a wry presence that I found heartening. Now I feel bad that I never got to his son's restaurant in Naples, Florida, when I traveled to visit my father.

George always struck me as a remarkably kind and intelligent guy with a quiet self assurance about himself. He always listened perceptively during our conversations and had a subtle wit which I really liked. I will really miss him.

Wednsday I lost one of my best friends and supporters. One of 3 ppl who have known me 52 years, all of my life... my dad George Sutton was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia on Thursday. God took him home today. He suffered a lot of pain the last few days but finally there is no more pain for him which is most important. The first 25 years were a little rough but i am blessed to be the man he helped mold me into... my heart is broken right now. I love you Podge. Please watch over all of us we will make sure Mom is ok. I love you more than you know...

George hired me at the Austin American-Statesman in 1981 and became my Lou Grant and Ben Bradlee. He would give you a smile as he gently corrected you and you knew that he was genuine and that he cared. I scheduled a story for the front page that he thought did not deserve such treatment, and as he sat down beside me, he simply asked, "What propels this story to the front page of tomorrow's paper?" I was armed for bear, but not for his gently inquisitiveness. I learned much from him and wished I'd learned more. He'll be missed. Our hearts go out to Nancy, the kids and grandkids.

I joined the Austin American-Statesman in 1984 and George was the man who hired me. He was a great journalist and mentor. There are many former Statesman employees remembering George at "Statesman Friends" Facebook group today. Here is a link; hopefully the family can see some of the tributes to our beloved colleague. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1707975442814134/permalink/2051179551827053/?comment_id=2051201391824869¬if_id=1519400609874781¬if_t=group_comment&ref=notif

George was a wonderful, compassionate man who never uttered a negative thought about anybody. He was a true professional journalist and a great role model for the younger staff members. Apparently, he was indeed young at heart because I was not aware that he was 7 years older than I am. Nancy and the kids have some great memories. I am truly shocked and wish his family and loved ones the best.

George and I were the two remaining siblings from a family of eight children. Now I remain the "last one standing". I will miss you George even though we lived may miles from each other. I always looked forward to our family reunions but your health prohibited you from traveling last year and you will be missed this year. Love you. Your sister, Louise Dennis

So sad to lose Uncle George. Being so close in age, we enjoyed many adventures as children. I did eventually forgive him for closing me up in Grandmother's roll-away bed . He will forever be remembered as a gentle, quiet spoken treasured member of our family.

My Uncle George......one of a kind! One of the most honorable men I know. Uncle George loved his family and I am so proud to be called one of them. He always had a smile on his face, was always so considerate of others, and never once turned down an opportunity to sit and just listen to whatever you had to say. He will be missed, but never forgotten. My heart goes out to my Aunt Nancy, all of my wonderful cousins, all of their spouses/children, and all of the Sutton family and friends. We are everywhere and we will stand strong, it's just the Sutton way, and just the way Uncle George would want it! I love you Uncle George..............rest in peace.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Sutton family. As a member of the Hoover's team, I had many pleasant conversations with George. So glad to read that he had many wonderful years with his loved ones.
