James Stokes Obituary

Although Roger Nathanson was grounded in his work in Kerrville, his passion was flying. He began to explore aviation with a hang glider about 15 years ago, his wife, Susan Nathanson said, and after that, "he got hooked." Roger Nathanson, 48, and James Stokes, 62, also a Kerrville resident, died Monday when Nathanson's two-seater ultralight aircraft crashed about 10 miles southwest of Fredericksburg in a field near Texas 16. The Texas Department of Public Safety and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash. FAA authorities said it could take weeks to determine the cause. According to the public safety department, witnesses said the plane's engine sputtered and the aircraft, a 2005 North Wing Design Apache Sport-B, began to spin before it crashed. Nathanson was the registered owner of the plane. FAA officials said the investigation would probably reveal where the plane took off from. Susan Nathanson said her husband and Stokes had known each other for about six months and got along well. They had flown multiple planes together and were experienced pilots. "He was really big on sharing that experience with other people," Nathanson said. "But Roger never flew with anyone unless they were experienced. He would not do that." Stokes was "happily married for forever," owned a private plane and was also a flying enthusiast, his son said. "He just loved to fly," said Jim Stokes, 35. "He died loving what he was doing. He just loved being in the air." Stokes was a dentist, and Nathanson owned a small business that sold water treatment equipment. Susan Nathanson said her husband "just loved being up there where he could see the terrain and everything around him. He just loved the smaller planes." Ultralight planes weigh less than 254 pounds and do not travel more than 55 knots, or about 63 miles per hour, according to the FAA. The plane Nathanson and Stokes flew was gasoline-powered, FAA spokesman Roland Herwig said. Two-person ultralight planes must be registered with the FAA and receive a federal airworthiness certificate. Nathanson's plane was inspected and properly registered, Herwig said. "He wasn't just a fly-by-night pilot," Susan Nathanson said. "Roger studied everything, from the mechanics to all of it. It really was a passion for him."

Becky and Jim Dobie and other kids... I'm so sorry for the loss! My Aunt Linda just called me and told me the news. I used to babysit Jim Dobie at Windemere. I'm was Carolyn Boyd's daughter. Hope you remember me... Becky, you were an avid tennis player. I hope you are still playing. I haven't been doing much of that lately due to 3 kids, but hopefully that will change soon. I am terribly sorry for the loss. My prayers are with you and all your family as you grieve. Jim is in a GREATER place now.... If that gives you an comfort, then that is good. Apparently he was a Christian and new the Lord. I love to hear that. If you need anything, please don't hesitate to call. I know Brad (my little brother) is upset about all this too. Take Care... Love you all..

So sorry to hear of the loss of Dr. Stokes. I went to him in 2007 for a dental implant, and he did the best work ever. I'm very pleased with how it turned out. He had his own technique.

He also seemed like a very kind and simple man, and I have no doubt that those who truly knew him and loved him, will miss him dearly. God bless his family.

My condolances to the Becky Dobie Stokes family. Sincerely Raul P. Morin, classmate of 1965.

Dear Becky and family,
When I heard the accident reported on Austin television, I got that knot in my stomach and feared it was Jimmy. I could only imagined what you felt, when you got the news along with the huge loss you felt.

I considered you and Jimmy true soul mates and the charmed couple from Cotulla High School. I can say I only saw a beautiful companionship you and Jimmy exhibited through the years and it was still evident when you came to the Cotulla High School reunion. You looked as happy as you always did together in high school. That glow never left.

My most sincere sympathy for your loss and take comfort that those who knew him feel a little loss in us as well.

Becky,
Larry was hit by a car and killed while riding his bike on March 29. It is a shock, as is Jim's death. I am interested in purchasing a good many acres augo am grateful that God took him home while he was doing something he loved - he called it "flying on wheels".

You will be in my prayers and thoughts throughout the coming months - as our Lord carries us through our grief. I am so sorry for the sudden loss of your beloved Jim. God has assured me through simple I will be praying for you and your family.
