Kimball Bockmon Obituary

Wayne Bockmon was born on June 24, 1955, in Pasadena, TX to Anna Joyce (Jones) Bockmon and Wayne Russell Bockmon. He left for parts unknown on September 2, 2024.

Wayne's full name was Kimball Wayne Bockmon, and he was also known as "Kim" to many who loved him.

He will be missed greatly by his sisters, nieces, nephews, other family members, friends, including his "friend-sibling", Teresa Denney, his First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin family, and, most of all, by his spouse and partner of 34 years, Chris Jimmerson.

Wayne and Chris were married once in Canada and then again in Austin, TX, after marriage equality finally came to the United States.

Wayne said how thankful he was that he fell in love with Chris instantly, and, as it turns out, permanently. Wayne and Chris counted a trip together to Florence, Italy, which began as a business trip, as their first date.

Wayne faced the end of his life with a sense of peace and gratitude that he lived the goals he had set out to live.

Even when he was a teenager, Wayne knew he wanted to be a doctor and to travel the world, and he did both.

He visited all seven continents, some of them multiple times.

For 37 years, he served as a much-loved family medicine physician, specializing in HIV/AIDS care.

In addition to the love his life, Wayne also held a special love for children and animals, especially dogs, who seemed to have a special love for him too.

He was dedicated to social justice and active politically, and about both, on occasion, he would espouse an opinion or two.

Now, he has traveled into the great mystery, and also continues his journeys within many a heart, especially Chris'.

Details for his memorial service will be announced at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, Wayne requested donations be made to First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin (austinuu.org).

I only knew Wayne casually back in the mid 1980's in Houston. He just happened to be my doctor in a health insurance group. He prescribed some effective medicine for my ankle, which had developed arthritis from ballet. I saw him at the Downtown Y as well. Never forgot him. At 64, I am experiencing my first mutual love with another man, 63. I can't imagine the emotional pain of losing someone you profoundly love. You are not alone. We share your pain. May you find solace and peace knowing Wayne has loved you back and wants you to thrive despite his temporary absence.

Wayne and I met in medical school and became best of friends studying late night for exams and bemoaning the rigors of medicine.
Over the years we travelled many places together. Drove a VW through Mexico, bicycled the streets of Paris in the early morning hours, witnessed the wildebeest migration in Kenya, marveled at the Aurora Borealis in Iceland…
He came out for Thanksgiving with my family one year and never left. He became a brother to my three sisters and I and my Mom called him son.
He told great stories and always found humor to embellish the world.
I miss my brother so very much. I love Wayne.

Wayne was such a wonderful man. He was a calming presence, and I absolutely loved teaching Zoom Sunday School with him during the pandemic. I feel very lucky that I got to know him, even just a little bit. My heart goes out to Rev. Chris and the First UU family. Sending love to all.

Wayne was a kind caring person who served his life helping others. He loved the theater. One of his favorite things to do was go to NYC and see a few Broadway Shows each year. He loved his dogs and he LOVED Chris so much. He will be missed!

Wayne was a steward fighting to care for HIV patients in the darkest days being an HIV advocate in his soft voice. When I came to Houston in 2003 from California as a fellow HIV provider, he accepted me without question and helped to foster the ability to care for sick clients and became a friend as well as a colleague. Rest easy my friend, I will miss you!
