Kimble Hill Obituary

Kimble Hill Kimble Hill, our dear father, husband, brother, friend and colleague, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Monday, March 1, 2010. He was born in Wichita Falls, Texas on September 12, 1952, to Katherine Joanne Douthitt and Vernon Donald Hill. Kimble's spent his first years on the family cattle ranch established by his great-grandfather in the late 1800s in Henrietta, Texas. He was deeply proud of his family history and their strong work ethic. Kimble attended public schools in the Dallas, Texas area. Kimble was fascinated by seamanship and joined the United States Navy on his 17th birthday. He was stationed several places but felt most at home on the USS Ault in Galveston, Texas and on training missions throughout the Caribbean Sea. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy, Kimble moved to Austin and found his true home and many important friendships. Kimble left Austin in his early 20s to set off on a number of adventures. Some of his exploits included working as a deckhand on a tug boat in the Mississippi, traveling around the country with only a backpack, and playing bluegrass and sea shanties with many talented musicians. He came back to Texas to care for his grandfather, Troy Douthitt, Sr., when he was suffering from a terminal illness. When Kimble returned to Austin, he embarked on an educational journey which resulted in bachelor's degree in radio, television and film from the University of Texas at Austin. After graduating, he worked on a number of local film projects. He found full-time work at the University of Texas, where he stayed for the next 14 years. After leaving UT, he did some soul searching and found his way to Apple Computer, which consummated an ongoing love affair with all things Apple. He recently returned to Apple, where he mastered the art of technical support. He worked as an Education Advisor for AppleCare at the time of his death. Kimble is blessed with loving friends and partners. He married Anne Wiebe in 1985 and together they created the most amazing and talented child, Beth Hill, who was born in 1988. When Beth began working at Apple in 2007, Kimble felt extreme pride and joy in sharing a workplace and passion for technology with his daughter. Kimble met Willa Rosen in 1997 and they married in an underwater scuba wedding in Cozumel, Mexico in 1999. They lived happily in South Austin until his death. Kimble had an infinite capacity for knowledge and had many hobbies and passions. For the past decade, he volunteered on the Hill Country Flyer, where he trained to be a fireman and brakeman on the engine of the train, fulfilling a childhood desire to work on the railroad. He also was a self-taught maritime history scholar and published several journal articles about scow sloops in the Texas Laguna Madre. He created scratch built scale ship models, several of which are housed in museums across the country. Kimble taught himself to play the guitar, mandolin and the ukulele and enjoyed long jamming sessions with friends and the bluegrass gatherings at Artz Rib House. He enjoyed political activism and was a frequent contributor to the Democratic Underground website. An avid and voracious reader, Kimble had a large collection of historical books and documents and enjoyed travel to historic places of interest. More than anything, he enjoyed spending time with Willa, Beth and their large circle of interesting and creative friends. Kimble did his best to Keep Austin Weird. Kimble is survived by wife, Willa Rosen; daughter, Beth Hill; sister, Donna (Bradd) Schwichtenberg; nephews, Matthew Schwichtenberg and Demetreus DeMarco; nieces, Kate Schwichtenberg, Aurora DeMarco, and Delilah Rose Martin. Other family includes aunt, Sara Douthitt, and cousins, Nan Byrne Dickens, Frank and Cratus Douthitt. The family will be hosting a memorial service on Saturday, March 6, 2010, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Please email for details on the memorial to: [email protected]. The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Austin Steam Train Association (ASTA) at 401 E. Whitestone Blvd. Ste A-103, Cedar Park, TX 78613 in Kimble's name.

I still cant get my head wrapped around that Kimble isn't on this planet with us anymore. I worked with Kimble for about 14 years. I knew him before I came to work at Apple where I was working at an Apple Reseller. Kimble use to answer calls from resellers like myself. The guy was a saint and we would always end up talking about much more than Apple business. He is such a great and unique person. I would love asking Kimble a question because a short answer wasn't something he was accustom to. I asked Kimble about train lanterns one day and off we went on a journey through history of train lanterns. Not only did I get a complete history lesson on train lights but the next day he showed up with an old train light that he gave me. I still have that lantern sitting on mantle at home and always think of Kimble when I see it. We shared a lot of laughs and he was an awesome person to know. He will be most definitely missed by this guy.

Kimble was one of the sweetest men that I have ever known. He was always so kind to me when we worked together at Apple and anytime I saw him around town. He will truly be missed.

Kimble,
I will truly miss you, my dear friend. I will always remember you and I sitting in the Gazebo at Apple's Ridgepoint campus, playing Bluegrass together. You were one of a kind that I am glad to have known.

Losing a loved one in death is never easy and the pain seems to be insurmountable but the Bible assures us that God has a yearning to resurrect those who have died as found in Job 14:14,15 where it says," If an able-bodied man dies can he live again? All the days of my compulsory service I shall wait, until my relief comes. You will call, and I myself shall answer you. For the work of your hands you will have a yearning." May the Hill family and friends find comfort in God's wonderful promises.

There aren't a lot of truly good people in the world, but I think Kimble was one of them. He always struck me as a genuinely caring person who always tried his best at everything he did. I'm grateful I got to know him, and that he was in my life, no matter how short a time that was.

I met Kim as I knew him in 1976 or 77 at his house on Duval . a sweeter man the world will never have... he introduced himself to me with his girlfriend at the time saying my name is Kim Hill and this is my girlfriend Kim Hill .. bizzare dating someone of the same name ..I ran into him again as I was installing blinds at UT in the 80's and taking down old "bass wood" blinds Kim went into overdrive with excitement telling me how this would be the perfect wood for his model ships.. I hope he finnally used them all as I gave him loads..I am sorry to see one of the old guard pass on at so young an age ...say hello to Lloyd for me see yall in abount 35 years

I have so many fond memories of Kimble and not enough time spend with him. I work with Kimble at Apple for several years and if my day was going not quite the way I want, I would simply visit Kimble in his cubicle and we would just laugh at life. He was a great friend and easily the smartest person I have ever known. Even smarter than my dad, which in my dad's mind was impossible growing up. I miss the great lunch breaks we had and all the help he gave when ever he was asked. I know in my heart that God has just requested another angel.

That's a wonderful biography, more than most people would accomplish in two lifetimes. I'm as happy to read this as I was sad to hear of Kimble's passing. I'm sorry for your loss.

Willa, I am so very, very sorry to hear of the passing of your husband. I know how well thought of he was in your family and so loved by you especially. None of us know the time we have left and it appears your dear Kimble did his best to cram his life with wonderful people and experiences. You are fortunate to have met him and had such a great life together. You have experienced one of the biggest, if not the biggest, fears of my life with the loss of your best friend and partner. I do not know how a person overcomes such grief, but I feel it is important to go on with your life and know that he is always in your heart and in your presence. Stay strong, dear Willa. I cannot imagine what I can do to lessen your grief, but if you ever think of something, I would joyfully do it. Love, Marilyn Zaruba

I came to work with Kimble just just 7 short months ago and we immediately found a kinship - perhaps because of our patriotism to the Navy and our fondness of the sea. I was fascinated with his attention to detail in every story he told and how many times he used the word "vexing" in his daily communications. I always giggled inside a bit because he was so passionate when he was "vexed" about an issue. There are many people that come in and out of our lives, but Kimble has touched mine and I will remember him always. "May Fair Winds and Following Seas be at your Back Always Kimble." Sincerely Angela Berkel - Apple
