Lawrence Schaubhut Obituary
Lawrence "Bubby" Paul Schaubhut, Sr., a longtime and beloved attorney in Austin, Texas, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2024, leaving a lasting legacy of kindness, humor, and service. He was born on March 9, 1937, in Lutcher, Louisiana, to Murvin and Hazel Schaubhut. He was the second of five children: Carolyn Hartley, Darwin Martin, Wayne Schaubhut, and Gail Schaubhut, with Darwin being the sole surviving sibling.
Larry graduated from Lutcher High School in 1955, where he excelled in football and track while working full-time at his father's bar, "Scutters.". He earned a Bachelor's degree from Louisiana State University in 1959, where he served as president of Phi Kappa Alpha and was a member of Advanced ROTC, eventually being commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.
After his military service, Larry embarked on a successful career in law. He became a General Insurance Agent from 1964 to 1970 before graduating from the University of Texas Law School in 1968. He was sworn in as an attorney on May 13 of that year and enjoyed over 50 years in private practice, earning respect and affection from clients and colleagues alike.
Throughout his life, Larry was actively involved in his community. He served as past president of the Austin Kiwanis Club, was a founding member of the Del Valle Lion's Club, and held the presidency of the Oak Hill Business Association. He was a proud father to six children: Larry Schaubhut, Jr., Grant Schaubhut, Scott Schaubhut, Gail Schaubhut (Fisher), Bruce Schaubhut, and Stephanie Schaubhut (Abney). His family extended to numerous grandchildren, stepchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Schaubhut.
Bubby cherished his time spent hunting with his stepson, Henry Catoire, and grandsons, Jaxson and Shawn Schaubhut. Known for his infectious sense of humor, he was an avid blackjack player and horse racing enthusiast, and proudly belonged to the "Lawrence Group." He had a unique talent for making friends with anyone he met and was renowned for his storytelling abilities.
In lieu of flowers or donations, Larry wished for everyone he knew to give their family, children, and grandchildren a huge hug, emphasizing the importance of love and togetherness. Honorary pallbearers include: Darius Terrell, Mike Tomsu, Vince Sullivan, Jason Nassour, Henry Catoire, and Jaxson Schaubhut. Larry did not want a formal service. But we are having a "life celebration" at Kelly's Irish Pub and Restaurant on the back patio, Wednesday, November 20, 2024, 4:30-7:00. Address is 519 West Oltorf Street, Austin. Plenty of parking in the back.
Larry will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
