Mary Bohls Obituary

Mary Jewell Cochran Bohls, age 99, went to be with her Lord on December 19, 2025, just as she was beginning her 100th year of a remarkably full and vibrant life. She was surrounded by her family and angel caregivers in the comfort of her home.
A native Austinite, she was born on November 11, 1926, to James Henry and Mary Mathilde Akin Cochran. She was a sister to three siblings and a fifth-generation Texan.
Mary married Everett Dayton Bohls in 1954. They raised three children and shared 54 beautiful years together until Everett's passing in 2009. She was a proud graduate of the University of Texas where she received a degree in Business Administration. Later she studied to be a CPA, passed the exam on her first try, and maintained her license in hopes of being the oldest CPA in Texas.
Mary was a devoted member of Austin Oaks Church (formally First Evangelical Free Church) and sang in the choir for years as an alto where "we made the harmony". She gave her professional advice to many charitable organizations. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the English- Speaking Union, the Ruh Neb Temple, and The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America ("the NSCDA"), where she devoted much of her time and talents and served as State President and National Treasurer. The Cochran family home, now known as the Neill-Cochran House Museum, is the headquarters of the NSCDA of Texas and an active museum house.
Affectionately known as "Mamie" to her grandchildren, she enjoyed nothing more than "Mamie-sitting". Her interests included piano, bridge, needlepoint, and crossword puzzles. Exquisite needlepoint Christmas stockings she made for family members are now hanging in their homes and will be a cherished memory of Mamie. Fascinated by new discoveries and the latest technologies, she delighted in being a lifelong learner. She and Everett traveled the entire world, to which her extensive collection of travel spoons and photo albums testify.
She is survived by her son, Rex and wife Laura, daughter Jane, and son, James and wife Kendall, along with six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Westminster, the team at Halcyon, and the many devoted caregivers who lovingly supported Mamie. Their tireless care made it possible for her not only to live independently but to live with dignity, comfort and love.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, conducted by Dr. Rob Harrell, followed immediately by a reception at the church.
Those desiring to donate in Mary's memory may send it to NSCDA in the State of Texas, 2310 San Gabriel Street, Austin, Texas 78705 (www. nchmuseum.org).

I had the privilege of knowing Mary when we sat next to each other in accounting classes at UT. She managed to be a top scholar even while raising her family. Pleasant, classy and kind are apt descriptors for a woman who lived such a full and interesting life. She left the world a better place.

Mary was an avid needlepointer. It was always a treat when she came into The Needle Works when I owned the store. Stitch away Mary.
