Maya H bner Obituary

Maya Andrea H bner On June 27, 2006, our dear, sweet daughter Maya died from complications associated with childhood leukemia. She was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in May 2005, and passed away peacefully at home thirteen months later. She was 13 years old. Maya accomplished much during her short life. She graduated from Barton Hills Elementary School as a straight A student and was named to the National Honor Society as a 7th grader at Kealing Middle School. Maya was very artistic and loved playing the piano, dancing, acting and figure skating. Her dream was to become an artist and a writer. She was a winner in a citywide essay contest and her "Surfin' Snowman" was selected as a 2005 holiday greeting card by CureSearch. During her illness Maya created many beautiful works of art and her passion for arts and crafts brought her much comfort during difficult times. Maya will be remembered for her gentle spirit, beautiful smile and her loving kindness. After her diagnosis, Maya continued to live positively and compassionately. She participated in cancer research studies, donated her hair to "Locks of Love," designed art work to help fund cancer research, and provided encouragement and inspiration to members of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training. Her final wish was that proceeds from the sale of her art work and writings be used to support childhood cancer research worldwide. Maya is survived by her mother and father, Georjean and Christian H bner; brother and sister, Stefan and Elena; grandparents Dr. Karl and Sibyll H bner of Knoxville, Tennessee; her uncle Philipp H bner; aunt Ia Wood; and cousin Linus Wood. The family would like to thank her physician, Dr. Sharon Lockhart, who works tirelessly on behalf of all her pediatric cancer patients as Medical Director of Hematology/Oncology at 'Specially for Children . We would also like to thank the compassionate nursing staff at the Children's Hospital of Austin for making the "Green Unit" a home away from home for us and for children like Maya. Special thanks also to all our friends and family in Austin who have been such a support and comfort to us during our time of need. A memorial service will be held on July 23, 2006, at 1:00 p.m. at the Church of Conscious Harmony, 7406 Newhall Lane, in Austin, Texas. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to CureSearch National Childhood Cancer Foundation at www.CureSearch.org or (800) 458-6223.
