Morgan Doyne Obituary

Morgan Doyne Morgan I. ("Bud") Doyne of Austin, Texas, died on June 12, 2013. He was born in St. Louis Missouri to Rose and Max Doyne. Upon graduation from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War II as an infantry combat medic in General George S. Patton's 89th Division. He was proud of his military service and said that treating and saving wounded American soldiers was the best job he had ever had. After World War II, Morgan enrolled at Purdue University, where he honeymooned with Marcella, his high school sweetheart and new bride. While at Purdue, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering and a Master of Science degree in soil mechanics. He later added a Master of Science degree in structural engineering from Washington University. During his distinguished career as a professional civil engineer, Morgan served as the vice-president of a large Midwestern construction company, supervising major projects in Missouri and Illinois. Successive positions included Union Electric Company's general superintendent for construction of the Callaway nuclear power plant and consultant to the University of Missouri System. Throughout his career, he enjoyed a reputation for strong organizational, convincing negotiation, and interesting speaking skills; and he was the author of several publications. Morgan was a Fellow and lifetime member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He also held memberships in the 89th Division Society, the St. Louis Masonic Lodge #1, and the Engineers' Club of St. Louis. He was a long-time member of the Ethical Society of St. Louis, where he taught Sunday School and reveled in the opportunity to discuss contemporary political, social, and moral issues. Besides enjoying long sojourns into nonfiction books, Morgan was an avid photographer who traveled extensively. Surviving Morgan are his wife of 64 years, Marcella; and his daughters Margo Saunders and her husband, Garry, of Canberra, Australia; Carla Doyne and her husband, Mike Bracken, of Austin; Karen Doyne of Washington, D.C.; and Diane Doyne of Chicago, IL. He is also survived by his grandchildren Brett, Rebecca, Ross, and Stephen; brother-in-law, Edwin Pepper, and his wife, Lenore; niece Karen and nephews Marc and Michael; and numerous dear friends. Morgan's remains will be inurned at the columbarium in Arlington National Cemetery. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave. Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601; The Ethical Society of St. Louis, 9001 Clayton Rd., St. Louis, MO 63117; or Army Emergency Relief, 200 Stovall St., Alexandria, VA 22332. Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankind; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee. John Donne

I will always remember Morgan for his strength and courage to challenge those whom he believed acted wrongly even when those he challenged had unlimited resources. I personally worked closely with him for many years during which time I enjoyed his good humor, his strong work ethic and his integrity. I wish his family, whom he loved dearly, well.

It was a pleasure to have met Mr. Doyne on his visit to the Museum of Science and Industry a few years ago. I enjoyed talking to him about his time in WW2. My sympathies and thoughts are with the Doyne family.
