Myra Rattan Obituary
Myra Joyce (Bishop) Rattan, 93, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at The Commons Assisted Living in South Bend, Indiana. Myra was born on June 30, 1932, to Edith Esther (McRae) and John Spurgeon Bishop in Belmont, Mississippi, delivered by her grandfather, Dr. Kenneth F. McRae.
Top of her class at Mississippi State College for Women (MSCW), Myra earned a bachelor's degree in library science in 1954.
Myra met the love of her life, Doug Rattan, during her Senior year at MSCW, when Doug's buddy arranged a blind date, remarking that, "You'll like this girl! She doesn't smoke or drink!" The tall, crew-cut cowboy from Texas, fresh out of the Navy, and the sweet Southern Belle discovered that they were kindred spirits, excited to blaze a new trail together. Myra and Doug were married on Nov. 23, 1955, in Lubbock, and shared 44 years of marriage, until Doug's death on February 12, 2000.
With 4 young children, the family moved from Texas to Lathrop, Missouri, in 1975 where they built their own 4-bedroom house from the foundation up! Upon returning to Texas in 2000 to be closer to family in Austin, Myra thoroughly enjoyed active membership in Northwest Hills United Methodist Church, including the Emmaus Community, United Methodist Women, the Flower Committee and her Sunday School class. Sharing her beautiful soprano voice with others, in concert with fellow enthusiasts in the Sweet Adelines, brought her great joy.
Myra was known for her strong faith, leadership, good humor, and intelligence. An incredibly creative cook, Myra's baking prowess was legendary, especially her buttermilk biscuits, cookies, blueberry muffins and red velvet cake. She sewed most of her young daughters' clothes, designed creative Halloween costumes and handmade gifts, and decorated our home with elaborate crewel embroidery designs.
Myra is survived by her daughters, Catherine (Charles) Bailey of Longmont, CO; Lynn (Danny) Romero of Longmont, CO; her sons, Scott (Laura) Rattan of Round Rock, TX, and Bill (Carlos Mock) Rattan of Chicago, IL; her grandchildren, Madelyn and Jared Romero of Longmont, CO; and Jacob, Bianca, and Nick Rattan of Round Rock, TX.
To honor Myra's memory, our family invites you to spend some time in nature, hug your loved ones, or lose yourself in a good mystery novel. Better yet, bake a batch of her recently revealed "Secret Recipe" for Pecan Sugar Cookies!
