Paul Mowry Obituary
Paul Mowry Jr.
01/28/1947 - 06/12/2025
Paul Mowry Jr, beloved father, grandpa, brother, friend, and child of Christ, was reunited with his parents and his Lord and Savior on June 12, 2025.
Paul was born on January 28, 1947 to Betty Jean (Marsh) and Paul Mowry Sr in Sedalia, Missouri. He graduated high school in Sedalia in 1965 and went on to earn degrees from Central Missouri State College in Warrensburg and the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Paul's career in journalism, which began as a boy delivering his local paper, took him all over the country. After a few years reporting and adventuring in Rawlins, WY, he met wife Diana Zicafoose while a sports editor in McCook, NE, where their son, Russell Dale, was born. He later joined Cox Newspaper Group in Grand Junction, CO, where daughter Rebecca April was born. The family eventually settled in Mesa, AZ and later in Austin. His specialty was leading inter-departmental teams in converting the newspapers in Mesa and Austin to electronic publishing. Paul retired in 2010 as the Director of Publishing and Business Systems for the Austin-American Statesman.
Paul was passionate about using his business skills to serve people in need. In retirement, he did volunteer work for several Austin nonprofits, notably Street Youth Ministry of Austin Inc., where he was treasurer, served on the board of directors and produced newsletters and other publications. He chaired the board of directors for the Religious Coalition to Assist the Homeless. He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, where he served on the mission committee. Paul enjoyed biking, fishing, playing piano and haunting the local Starbucks with his New York Times crossword puzzle. But his children and grandchildren were his greatest joy.
Paul is survived by son Russell Mowry (Jessica) of Centennial, CO, daughter Rebecca Mowry of Hamilton, MT, grandchildren Etta, Elliot, and Eleanor of Centennial, brother Bruce Mowry (Sharon) of New Orleans, LA, ex-wife but still close friend Rev. Diana Circelli (Phil) of Kenedy, TX, and numerous friends and acquaintances. The family would like to extend special thanks to Judith Cayton, Eddie Burns, Rick Gerber, Robbie Albracht, Pamela Wachholz, neighbors Prasad and Aparna, the Bell family, and Covenant Presbyterian Church for their compassionate assistance to Paul and family over the last few months. We are forever grateful he got to see so many friends and family in the days before his passing. Paul touched many lives and will be dearly missed.
A memorial service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Austin on Saturday, September 20 at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, we encourage donations in his memory to an Austin nonprofit of your choice.
