Pedro GUZMAN Obituary

GUZMAN Jr., Pedro "Pete"

April 20, 1943-January 16, 2014

Pete was born and raised in San Benito, Texas. A first-generation college student, he attended The University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration, breaking barriers and creating new opportunities for his children. He lived in Austin for many years, then Minnesota, and returned to Texas where he lived the final years of his life in Dallas.

Pete's family knew that if he wasn't at home, he was shopping at Wal-Mart, one of his favorite pastimes. Tax consultation was another one of Pete's passions, along with watching his beloved alma mater, the Texas Longhorns, play football. He touched many lives with his dry humor, wisdom, advice, and love.

Pete will be sadly missed by his wife Phyllis Guzman, but she will cherish the memories of their 33 years of marriage. Pete's pride and joy were his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren: his daughter Monica, her son Christopher, his wife Katie, and their children Isabella and Jasmine; his daughter Melissa and her husband Woody; his daughter Michele, her husband David, and their children Nicolas and Noemi; his son Peter; his daughter Millicent, her husband Isaac, and their children Isaac, Gabriel, Marc, Genevieve, and Viviana; his son Paul-Michael, his wife Angel, and their children Michael, Etiana-Michele, Masos-Alexander, and Rozen-Lael; his son Neal and his children Jesse, Olivia, and Karoulyn; his son Patrick and his children Anthony, Tyler, and Olivia; his daughter April; his son Dominique, his wife Jessica, and their children Tyler, Jaxson, and Grayson; his daughter Cassandra, her husband Paul, and their children Ryker and Alana. They will all greatly miss their "Daddy," "Papa," "Grandpa Pete," "Grandpa Big Bear," and "Abuelo".

Pete was preceded in death by Guadalupe "Lupita" Guzman, with whom he shared six children and the first chapter of his life. He thought of her often in recent years and knew he would once again have the opportunity to discuss the lives and many accomplishments of their children.

Pete will be missed by his brothers and sisters. They recall that he was always informed on many matters and willing to share the information in regular conversations. He often had a funny story or joke to tell and, of course, Pete always provided great financial advice. His support with income taxes was superb. He is survived by his sisters: Regina and her husband Armando, and Margarita; brothers: Rodolfo and his wife Aurora; Juan; Crespin and his wife Mary; and Antonio and his wife Tina.

Donations can be made in Pete's memory to The American Heart Association. See his memorial page "In Memory of Pedro "Pete" Guzman, Jr." at:

Being that today is Fathers Day, what I would give to see Daddy, hear him say "Hi baby" as he gives me a kiss and hugs me .. but that isn't going to happen.

What I can do is enjoy the memories of each time it happened and honor his memory doing what he told me to do: be yourself and do what matters to you. I think Daddy always knew I was headed for a life in activism and running for office, even before I did.

Happy Fathers Day, Daddy.
I miss you and love you.

There are so many things I want to say, I don't know where to start.

Memories that are very Daddy-centered like my first day at Pillow Elementary, playing on his motorcycle, or just my "alone" time I was fortunate enough to have when we walked, driving to store, etc.

I'll come back later when I'm better able to share my thoughts, my memories.

For now, I'll say this ...

You are the best Daddy anyone can have. I'll miss you terribly. I love you!

Love, Punkin
