HERNANDEZ, Rachel LaFuente Rachel LaFuente Hernandez, 93, a lifelong Austin resident, passed into eternal rest surrounded by her loving family on October 13, 2018. She was born in Austin on May 18, 1925, to Amelia and Henry LaFuente. She married her soul mate Rudy Hernandez on December 5, 1941 and they had five children. Rachel was a loving and devoted wife and mother who cherished her family and believed they were her greatest accomplishment. Rachel was kind, thoughtful, generous and a woman of deep faith. As she and Rudy were both excellent cooks, their home was where everyone gathered and were always welcomed. She was active in her children's schools and activities and was president of the Metz Elementary School PTA in the 1950's. She retired from employment with the Texas Educations Agency in 1987. Rachel was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Rudy Hernandez; brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry and Mary LaFuente; Lupe and Gloria LaFuente; sister Irene Barrera and brothers-in-law Alejandro Barrera and Teodoro Jaime. She is survived by her children, Rudy Hernandez, Jr. (Mary), Alfredo Hernandez (Suzanne), Mary Alice Arizmendez (John), Cynthia Banke, Debbie Polanco (George); her sister, Angelina Jaime. Also left to cherish her memory are her grandchildren, Michelle Arriaga, Samuel Avila, Lynette Guerrero, Suzanne Pekarek, Julian Duran, Eric Hernandez, Jason Hernandez, Shelly Beck, Jorge Polanco, Rene Polanco; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Sincerest appreciation to Michelle Arriaga for the love, attention and care she provided to her grandmother. Pallbearers will be the grandsons. Samuel, Julian, Erik, Jason, Jorge, and Rene. Honorary pallbearer will be nephew, Michael LaFuente. Recitation of the Holy Rosary 7:00 pm on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 South Congress. Funeral Mass 10:00 am on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at Cristo Rey Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery. Remembrances may be left at www.wcfish.com

My family and I will have wonderful memories of Tia Rachel (and Tio Rudy) to last our entire life time; like BBQ's at Barton Springs, Holiday celebrations and just sitting out on the front porch talking and listening to music at home and a very special lunch she especially made for me 6 years ago.
