I am in Shock. OMG I can't believe Mr Torres has passed away. I just today saw this 4/29/2010. I am so sorry, my condolences to the entire family. He was my teacher in Jr High Martin Jr. High. He was my favorite teacher when I was there. I am so saddened. I just cannot believe it no one told me he died. I didn't even see it in the Austin paper when it came out. I would have been there. I would have gone to his service. I am so sorry.

Dear Alma, I was so saddened to hear of Ray's passing away. There are so many fond memories of both of you in the 100 hall we shared at Travis. Memories are so special-we can hold them in our hearts and minds and touch them at any time. Ray had a heart of gold-loving caring, helpful, encouraging and compassionate. He always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. He was a terrific administrator for custodians, clerical staff, faculty and students alike, guiding and leading all of us. Ray was a gentle giant. Rest in God's arms, Ray; you are now a heavenly angel, ready for new tasks. Love and prayers to Alma and family.

I am so sad to hear about Mr. Torres passing away. He was always a great person to talk to, even if you weren't in the office for a good reason! I skipped too many classes and he always gave me crap for it in Saturday school :) I will always remember him as such a nice man who listened and who didn't try to intimidate students. Those of us who attended Travis were very fortunate to have him as a role model. He will definitely be missed. My thoughts are with his family.

Alma and other Torres family members:
Arturo and I will always remember Raymond with fond memories as a very loving and kind person. Raymond and Arturo met at San Antonio College and both wanted to be pharmacists. As Vietnam veterans they had alot in common and similar interests. When he came to Austin to attend pharmacy school we kept in touch all those wonderful years. Raymond chose education which fitted him best because of his outgoing personality. Our most heartfelt condolences to the entire Torres families. God bless you all and give you His unending love and comfort. Arturo and Leonila Gonzalez

Alma and the entire Torres family...Mr. Torres was a very kind, warm, and caring administrator and friend to me. I cannot express how sorry I am for your loss, but I can tell you how fond the entire Travis family was of him. He was soft-spoken and always sported a big smile, no matter how difficult the situation at hand. I remember well when I had a mice problem in my classroom and I complained repeatedly to him. He set traps in my room, so when the first one got caught, I sent it to him, wrapped in a shoe box. The student that delivered it later told me that he laughed so hard and said he new where from where it came. I expected a reprimand, but that was not the case. Mr. Torres had a great sense of humor with an endearing personality. I pray that you find confort in all the good memories we all have of him. My prayers and thoughts are with you on this day when heaven opens its doors for a true angel.

I did not have the privilege of knowing this good man but he was my brother in arms. He was a fellow Vietnam War Veteran and that says all I need to know to love him as my own brother. God has called him to heaven where he will be at peace and without suffering. To those of you he left behind may the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you and may the Holy Spirit console you and comfort you. Amen.

Torres Family,

I was crushed when I learned about the passing of your dad, husband and grandfather today. He was a wonderful teacher and most of all a wonderful man. I remember walking into my first day of Spanish class at Fulmore Jr. High my eight grade year and will never forget his smile. He was by far my favorite teacher and I was sad to leave his class when the year ended. However, little did I know our paths would cross again when he joined the Assistant Principal staff at Travis High School my senior year. Of course I didn't realize he had come to Travis until the summer before my senior year began when I was called to the principal's office. There had been some antics with shoe polish and car windows between the drill team and some of the band members. Good news is it was all harmless fun, but I was suprised to see that it was Mr. Torres who had come to fetch me from dance practice. We had a nice talk on the way to Ms. Vela's office remembering the Fulmore days which had seemed such a short time ago.

Roxanne and Raymond -- I enjoyed getting to know the two of you through your dad and could see even back then the values he instilled in you. I always felt your dad was like a second father to me and all of the students he encountered.

My deepest sympathies to your family. There will never be another teacher like Mr. Torres.

To the entire Torres family. There are no words to express the heartache of hearing of Mr. Torres' death. He was such a role model for so many kids whose lives where changed because of him. He lite up the halls with that GREAT BIG GRIN! and when he talked to the students he made them feel they were important to him. Because of his care, love and devotion to the students many went on to become a success. I know this, because he did this for my son. Thank you for sharing him with students, staff and the Wm. B. Travis High School family. God's arms hold you and give you comfort and peace. Memories are what we have.

Alma,
I considered Ray a close confidant and friend. When the time came for me to select an Assistant Principal at Lamar Junior High School, there was no doubt in my mind that Ray was an excellent candidate. He was loved and respected by our Lamar staff; I will always remember his smile and positive attitude. Alma, only Ray and I knew this at the time; therefore, let me share a bit of interesting information with you and the family...when you pass Lamar Middle School off Burnet Road in Austin, and notice the large LAMAR sign on the gymnasium brick wall facing Burnet Road, well, the story behind that sign definitely has its origin with Ray: One day he told me that Lamar Savings and Loan Company was closing, and they had a large LAMAR sign that he had an opportunity to pick up if we wanted it. Without hesitation, my response was, "Go for it, Ray." Some time later, I left Lamar and began working at Bowie High school where I retired after 15 years. Every time I pass Lamar and see the School sign, my thoughts return to the wonderful years Ray and I worked together as an administrative team. God bless you and your family. He was a great man and dear friend.

My Dear Alma and Ray's beautiful children,
Raymond Torres was one of Wm.B. Travis High School’s most admired and respected administrators. Ray left many footprints of love for his family, his students, his teachers, his friends and his country. Ray was born with a warm and caring nature and he demonstrated it when he volunteered to be a Vietnam Medic. Ray courage and bravery is well known and he bore the scars on his back trying to get to his fallen brothers. Ray always spoke of his family with a twinkle in his eye and after he commented there came his signature smile. Ray also knew how to share his God given talents especially with our special education students. In cooperation with our business adopters and other teachers he help built our first organic garden for the Special Education Department. Ray was so proud of this project that he invited his father, Ray Senior from San Antonio for the completion and ribbon cutting ceremony. Ray Senior became an Honorary Faculty member for his support and kindness toward our students. I will always be thankful to Ray for creating a safe environment for our faculty at Travis. Moreover, Ray was especially thoughtful to my mother who loved him as one of her own. Thank you, Ray, for the memories and we will keep you always in our hearts. Ray Torres…. Faithful Servant of our Lord Jesus Christ…. Thank you.

Ray Torres was a mentor and a friend. As a 2nd year teacher I worked with Ray at Fulmore M.S. addressing gang issues in the club "Ayuda". Years later, we worked together at Travis H.S., and most recently at Garza H.S. I cannot think of a more decent, caring human being than Raymond Torres. Le vaya bien

Alma, words cannot tell you how sorry I am for the loss of Ray. He took care of all of us while at Travis. I have such fond memories of him showing me where I needed to go at my first back to school night...only to find out he and Robert knew each other from San Antonio! From that moment on, he was always there for my kids and a shoulder for me to lean on. Ray was the administrator that every parent wants looking after their kids at school. He will never be forgotten and always remembered with warm, sweet memories. You and all your family will be in our prayers and thoughts. Sharon, Nathan, and Leanna Singleton, Austin, Texas

God bless you Ray for all that you did for Alma, your family, your students & all those people who's lives you affected. A true example of "Above & Beyond", but then again, all you ever wanted was the best for those around you. Adelie will never forget you, she'll miss you as we all will, but confident that we will be together again. God bless you Alma for all that you did for Ray.
