Retired Simpson Obituary

Retired Colonel Pat Simpson
June 6, 1946 - July 31, 2025
Retired Colonel Pat Simpson passed away peacefully on July 31, 2025, in Austin, Texas, at the age of 79. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, soldier, and proud Texan, Pat's life was marked by service, integrity, and deep love for his family and country.
Born on June 6, 1946, in Amarillo, Texas, Pat was raised in Coleman and later attended Baylor University. In 1967, he began what would become a distinguished 38-year military career by joining the Texas Army National Guard. Over the decades, he served in several esteemed units, including the 143rd Infantry Regiment, the 36th Infantry Division, and the 371st Airborne Brigade. He was a third-generation guardsman. His grandfather served in the 36th Infantry Division in World War I, and his father served in the 36th Infantry Division in World War II.
In 1969, Pat and his beloved wife, Woodene, made their home in Austin, where he continued his service at Camp Mabry. He rose to the position of United States Property and Fiscal Officer for the state of Texas, a role in which he proudly safeguarded the resources of the Guard. Following his military retirement, Pat continued serving others as the Director of the Texas Military Forces Museum, preserving the legacy and history of those in uniform.
Pat found joy in the simple pleasures of life: listening to classic country music, fishing, cheering on the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Longhorns, spending cherished time with family, and enjoying a cold Budweiser at the end of the day.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Woodene; their three daughters, Dena, Darla (Mason Thompson), and Nonnie; five granddaughters, Tayler, Noelle, Lexi, Crosby, and Brianna; and two great-grandchildren, Khloe and Landon. His legacy of strength, humor, and heart lives on through them.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to a veterans' organization of your choice.
