I want to extend my deepest condolences to Rex’s family. I know very much how much he loved his family.

Rex is been like a brother to me for the last 30 years. He was a good hearted man with a very kind and caring soul.

Our paths crossed professionally many times over the years and we were both appreciative every time it happened. I worked for him in Florida early in our careers and learned more about leadership and decisiveness than perhaps anywhere. He taught me about “straight talk” and how important open and honest communication was in our field.

Rex worked for me in South Carolina later in our careers when I needed someone with his leadership qualities, problem solving skills and calm demeanor. He did not let me down.

There are many other times we work as colleagues helping each other professionally whenever we could, working on consulting projects together or sometimes just being a “listening ear”. I always valued his input, advice and wise counsel. Rex was a man of principled leadership and you always knew which direction his professional compass pointed. In the end, it was all about doing what is best for children.

Rex was always there for me on a personal front as a true friend as well. He always asked about my family and how they were doing. I always knew what was going on with his family as well through the years. He was so delighted last year to send me pictures of his grandchildren at Christmas playing around the train set. He was so proud of all his children and the life of being a grandfather.

Rex didn’t just talk about family and friendship, he lived a life as a true friend and a caring soul. He was there for me when I had no place to go and needed a couch to sleep on for the night. He was always holding a place in line for me at Franklins Barbecue in Austin as he waited hours to place his order. He always offered to help you in any way he could. I am glad I was able to repay him a time or two like when I helped him move his very heavy furniture up at two flights of stairs at his new Austin apartment on one of the warmest days of the year.

We never lost touch with each other. We talked, we texted, we constantly shared information about what was happening in our field regularly. Most importantly there were times when we were able to get together some where and have a nice meal and then enjoy a good drink and a cigar afterwards. Rex always had an extra cigar for me. I only wish we would have had many more moments like that in our lives because I cherished them so much.

My heart is broken right now like so many others. I will miss hearing his voice and miss the many times we were able to connect throughout the years.

Time well spent is a life well lived. My friend and amigo lived a very good one.

Rex was my father in law and I will miss very much. He was sweet, kind, and a present father. He always made it a priority to be there for his family, blessing us with his fun and easy going company. He had a captivating personality, a loving demeanor and was so very kind to all around him. I will miss watching movies and sports with him, i will miss watching the happiness he would get from simple things, like a good tex-mex meal and a cigar by the pool. I wish I had know you sooner, Rex. You will always live in our memories and hearts.

My dad was good man. I could always count on him for an impromptu phone call for advice or just to talk music, politics, or get a one of his classic dad jokes.

His passion for helping children and families was undeniable by all that knew him.

I’ll always keep my dad in my heart and his voice in my ear. I hear him even now as I craft his perfect playlist, “hey man, don’t forget the Pat Metheny, Tower of Power and Blood Sweat and Tears”!!
I got you covered Dad.

See you on the dark side of the moon!

I love you,
Evan
