Robert Terry (RT) Mayfield, beloved husband, father and friend passed away into the everlasting arms of his savior, Jesus Christ, due to heart failure and a pulmonary embolism on Tuesday, May 20, 2025 at the age of 78. Robbie was born in Houston, Texas on December 28, 1946, to Wallace and Bernell Mayfield. He loved his Lord with all his heart, soul, mind and strength and loved his family as much as anybody possibly could. He is survived by his wife, Treeta DeZelle Mayfield, the love of his life and best friend; his daughter, Amy Sturgeon and her husband Steve; his grandson Gage Carter Sturgeon and more friends than we can count. He was predeceased by his parents, Bernell and Wallace Mayfield, his baby son, Robert Carter Mayfield and his older sisters, Ginger Mayfield Milam and Cindy Mayfield.
Robbie grew up in a smaller and quieter Austin in a childhood filled with family and friends. Robbie was a Boy Scout and member of the award-winning Troop 410. He had a love and talent for football, playing quarterback for his Junior High and High School, McCallum, graduating in 1965. Robbie hoped for a college football scholarship but was told he was too small. Robbie persisted, started TCU as a walk-on and not only earned a full ride scholarship but was named Best Defensive back at the TCU Georgia Tech football game! Robbie was such an impactful player that his coach nicknamed him Mr. 100%! But, of the many coaches he had, to Robbie his best coach was his dad, Wallace.
Friendships were vitally important to Robbie. His grade and high school friends recall treasured memories of their trips with him in the 60s to Port Aransas. These trips were where he developed a reputation for strictly following his football training regimen by being asleep by 9:00 pm. When their truck was stuck on the beach and RT was nowhere to be seen helping them to dig out of the sand, they found him asleep in the truck bed (it was after 9:00 pm). Robbie was a lifetime outdoor enthusiast who especially enjoyed hunting with his wife, family and friends. For the past 20 years, his favorite hunting experience was the "Birthday Boys" quail and dove hunt with Caroll Sullivan and Steve Matthews, who had the same birthday week as Robbie. The "birthday boys" were joined by Steve Rivers and Jay Evans, along with Robbie's godsons Chad Sullivan and Jed Evans.
After TCU, Robbie began what would become a storied and extensive career as home builder, general contractor and real estate developer, all under the name RT Mayfield Companies. He quickly became a true pillar of the Austin real estate community. Some of his well-known residential and commercial projects include Creekside Square, Crossroads, Balcones Woods and Rockport Village in North Austin, Davenport Village, Cat Mountain Villas, The Courtyard, Westover Hills, Twin Mesa, Austin Woods, and his beloved Lakewood subdivision in the 360 area, three shopping centers on Mesa Drive and University Park Village center in Fort Worth, just to name a few. He truly played a pivotal role in shaping the Austin landscape. Robbie was always passionate about and supportive of the Austin community. One of the highlights of his community involvement was building the structure that became the Travis County Expo Center. Robbie loved Rodeo Austin and was the originator of the Mutton Bustin' event and member of team roping.
Robbie and Treeta both lived and loved playing golf in the Barton Creek Community. Robbie especially loved the Barton Creek Fitness Center, where he worked out every single day, and their staff became his family. Robbie and Treeta will forever be grateful to them for their support last Tuesday, especially when they closed the fitness center the rest of the day in Robbie's honor, and on Wednesday they all wore purple, which is Robbie's TCU color.
Robbie lived his life as a man on a mission to show others how to love Jesus Christ. He and Treeta were an unstoppable team, using their gifts and talents to build God's Kingdom. They were "all in" when their family at Austin Ridge Bible Church needed to grow. They championed the "NEXT" fund and many missions were supported through Austin Ridge. Their joy was to "get to serve" wherever needed.
A memorial service for Robbie will be held Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. in the Austin Ridge Bible Church Worship Center, 9300 Bee Caves Road, Austin, Texas.
Those of us who knew Robbie understood he was a man of action, not words. Building communities was Robbie's life's passion and calling. If you would like to honor Robbie's legacy, in lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the NEXT campaign. You can find out more by opening the link
