Steve Gillis Obituary

GILLIS, William Stevenson Steve Gillis, age 68, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away peacefully on January 8th, 2019, at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio. He died following a sudden struggle with heart disease. He was born on March 24th, 1950 to Steve and Loretta Gillis, in Memphis, Tennessee. His parents, and many of his family members, have been longtime residents of Harlingen, Texas. Steve was a staunch believer in transcendental meditation. He studied the teachings of Ramana Maharshi and H. W. L. Poonja (Papaji), which he learned under the spiritual guidance of Eli Jaxon-Bear and Gangaji. Steve was an avid athlete who played hardball in Austin for decades, most recently with the Austin Metro Men's Senior Baseball League. Steve treasured his time playing ball, and many of his teammates were his dearest friends. He frequently traveled across the country with them to participate in tournaments. While Steve enjoyed playing second base, his favorite position was shortstop. His passion for the sport was one of the greatest thrills of his life, and to say he loved it would be an understatement. Baseball was his bliss. Steve had only one grandson, Gunner from Colorado. Steven loved Gunner so much...he was the delight of Steve's life. Steve looked forward to teaching Gunner many things about life and baseball. Steve's relationship with Gunner, as with all of us, was cut much too short. He is survived by his beloved wife Dr. Bonny Gillis, who shared a life with him in San Antonio; his daughter, Crystal Gregory; his stepsons, Mark Riojas and Matthew Riojas; his grandson, Gunner Gregory; his sisters, Jenny Brumley, Lisa Gillis, Patti Scott, Sissy Gillis, Paula Nilsson, and Loretta Cote; and his brother, Rick Gillis. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and other family members, as well as his dearly loved poodle Arlo. He should be remembered for his charm, his wicked sense of humor, his practiced authenticity, and his kindness and humility. Steve reminded us that it's possible to be a good man, and we all learned from his example. His memory will be cherished by his friends, family, and all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Magdalena House in Steve's memory. They can be reached at their website, maghouse.org, or you can mail to: Magdalena House, PO Box 692041, San Antonio, TX 78269. Steve's life will be celebrated on his birthday, March 24th, at Fiesta Gardens in Austin Texas from 6-8 PM. "Miss you my love." - Bonny Gillis

I'm so sorry for your loss. I played baseball with Steve for a few years when he played in San Antonio. He was an instant friend, and enjoyed his company immensely. He was kind, gentle and always available to offer advice to a new player. I was proud to know Steve, and he will always be in my memory. I'll miss him! - David Weis

Smooth was a good friend and a great representative of Austin Men's Baseball. He played the game with grace, character and happiness. We had several wonderful trips to Phoenix for the Men's Senior Baseball World Series he always made it a fun trip. Sorry to see you leave this life but I'm sure you're up there getting and giving tips to all the great short stops in heaven.
