Thomas Ferguson Obituary

Thomas Wayne Ferguson Apr. 18, 1941 - Dec. 25, 2008 Tom Ferguson, 67, died peacefully at his home on Christmas Day, 2008, after a short battle with cancer. His bedside was surrounded by his four beloved children and family members who loved him beyond words. Tom was born on April 18, 1941, in Sabine County, Texas, the son of Thomas Selmer Ferguson and Lawis Key Barrington. His aunt Bessie Ferguson and his paternal grandparents raised him on a small farm in the piney woods of east Texas. His stories of his youth were full of gratitude for the values and love instilled in him by these three people. He learned early the rewards and price of hard work, and never was deterred by circumstances, challenges, or obstacles. He chopped and stacked untold cords of wood to earn money for his first car, played basketball, and participated in track events in high school, studying just enough to get good grades and learn what was important. The day after he graduated from Brookeland High School in 1958, he moved to Houston with $12.00 and big dreams in his pocket. He knew he was born to be a "bidness man", and he began his phenomenal career by sweeping floors for Barrington & Sons Auto Parts. He intuitively understood the fundamentals of success: working tirelessly, treating everyone fairly, thinking innovatively, and taking calculated risks. He also understood the importance of team building. Even at the end, he was surrounded by a team of like- minded, dedicated, smart, honest, and caring people who worked side by side with him to create a business they could all be proud of. Within a few short years of arriving in Houston, Tom went into business for himself, establishing Tasco (Tom's Auto Supply Company) Auto Parts. The business grew and evolved, with Tom always seeking opportunities and solving problems in the changing economic climate of Houston and the nation. With independent auto parts businesses facing a squeeze from large national chains, Tom opened Roadmaster Engine Company and then Tasco Auto Color. In 2005 he received the national award from PPG paint company for being their Platinum Distributor of the Year. Although he left the farm and called Houston home for fifty years, Tom never forgot where he came from. In addition to giving his children the things he never had when he was growing up, he consciously strove to instill in them the things he did have when he was growing up, the rock-solid values on which a happy life can be built. Tom had no plans to retire. He lived and loved with great zest and never tired of the opportunity to learn something new each day. He relied on his heavenly Father each day for strength, courage, and wisdom, and he prayed daily for his friends and family members. Tom drew ongoing strength and comfort from his deep Christian faith. Those who knew Tom would agree that he epitomized class in the very truest sense of the word. He was at home with people in every walk of life, treating all with dignity, respect, and good humor. His word was his honor, and his honor was impeccable. He was a man of great heart, great intellect, and great presence. The world is a better place because of Tom Ferguson. Tom is survived by his wife, Terri Ferguson; children Lisa Michele Ferguson Bynum (Joe Peyton), Thomas John Ferguson, Pamela Ferguson Sperber (Mark), and Rachel Ferguson; siblings, James Ferguson, Barbara Ryan, Jerry Ferguson, Terry Jo Eddy, and Wanda Leone; three beloved grandchildren; and former wives Martha Atkins and Rebecca Ferguson. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Visitation with the family will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Monday, December 29, 2008, at Klein Funeral Home, 16131 Champion Forest Drive, Spring, TX 77379. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 30, 2008, at Champion Forest Baptist Church, 15555 Stuebner Airline, Houston, TX 77069. The family suggests memorial donations to the American Cancer Society.

He was my oldest and dearest friend. We met in 6th grade in that little piney woods schoolhouse deep in east Texas. that was the start of our neverending journey through time eternal. We were "high school sweethearts" at Brookeland High where we both graduated. We were married in 1959. Michele arrived 4 years later, TJ, 3 years after that.
Although our interests took us in different directions in the early 70s, we remained ever present in each other's lives. Our one constant was the love. Over the years, Tom brought others into my life whom I came to love. Pamela, Rachel and Terri became my family too. Tom loved my son Michael. We loved each other's children. My life is richer for that. We enjoyed many weekends together as an extended family out here on Lake Medina with all the kids, grand kids, aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces. James and Gloria and their kids & grand kids. That weekend last summer when everybody showed up. Pam & Mark came, Geri Lynn, Cheryl and their kids and spouses, our kids and grand kids, my kids, his kids. We played 42, cooked, swam and had a blast on the pontoon boat.
Tom, I am proud of what we did with the love we had for each other. The way we put our family together and made it so special. Because of you, we are not fragmented but are one extended, loving family comprised out of both our marriages, each one of us an integral part.
Tom, I don't remember a time when you weren't there for me. You are still here for me. My world will not be the same without you in it. I know you know it - but I will say it anyway; I loved you from the beginning, I love you still, I will love you always. Martha

Terry, Michelle, TJ and the rest of the Ferguson family and friends.
We just wanted you to know how much your beloved husband and father touched our lives. Tom was Gold in a world full of dross.

The Bible tells us that in the
Passage Jeremiah 9:7:7 Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts: Behold, I will melt them [by the process of affliction to remove the dross] and test them, for how else should I deal with the daughter of (children of) My people?

His journey was a difficult one and yet he triumphed where so many fall. Tom was a living breathing miracle and he shared his joy freely that was our blessing.

In this his final test God showed mercy as only he can and he took his son, Tom, home.

Tom truly did light up a room with his winning smile and ready heart. He loved you all so much and was so greatful for your love for him. I know he is in heavan at the big meeting with all those saints who've gone before and he is looking down with the same love and gentle guiding hand he so deftly wielded here. I see his winning smile and feel his hug as he speaks his love and grattitude for you his family. We are blessed to have known him and join you in your sorrow for your loss and your celebration of such wonderful love in your lives. May God continue to bless and keep you, comforting you as you fondly remember.

Ferguson Family,
I was blessed with a devine appointment when I first met Tom. I can't begin to tell you of the changes I made in my life due to this man's enate ability to make complicated issues so simple. He was able to give you a life experience and just give some insights that he was able to overcome. He was always kind and gentle with his words. He was always there to give assistance or offering ideas for the success of whatever bussiness venture. I thank the Furgeson family, for allowing us to share such a great person. I am so blessed to have been able to shake the hand of a true Gentleman, God Fearing, Well balanced, Strong ethical values, and a family man. I can go on and on with what Tom has done to influence my life for the good and to also recognize that we are only here for a short visit. But, while we still can, we can make a difference too. I can only hope to be able to immulate his walk in life. We here at the Cabrera home will lift up our prayers. May GOD wrap his loving arms around you and give you the strenth to know that you are loved.

I met Tom at a Christmas party Tasco held every year. He struck me as a interesting man. He sat and told me a few stories of how Tasco started and how he loved the business. We seen each other a few more times after the first party and I got to know him a bit more. I have to say he was a great man and know he is in a better place, painfree. I hope you all know that he now is watching over you. Tom you will be missed by many friends and family.

I met Tom through my father, Glen Schulz, while at a convention in Las Vegas many years ago and was a little shocked and thrilled to find that a man with his great success was so kind to everyone he met. He touched many lives including my own. It was an honor and a pleasure to know him and I hope all of the kind words written by so many that loved him will help your family in some small way by knowing how respected and cared for he is.

Tom,

Although our paths crossed only a handful of times, I remember your big smile and enthusiasm for life. Your passion for excellence was evident in all that you did. Looking at the photos in the album, it is evident that God's plans for your life were fulfilled. We are all comforted in knowing that He has now welcomed you into paradise.

Mr. Ferguson you will always hold a special place in my heart.

December 30, 2008

I would not have known of Tom's passing if my daughter had not called me from Houston to ask if I knew Tom. And if she had not called I would not have noticed Thomas Wayne Ferguson in the orbs.

I grew up with Tom, James and Barbara in that little East Texas town of Brookeland. I knew their aunt Bessie. When in high school we lived about a mile and a half from her but by that time Tom, James and Barbara had finished school and left Brookeland.
After I married while my husband James Hilliard was in Germany, my grandparents, Brittain and Pearl Anderson and I lived in Selmen's rent house, the old Shoemake place. I knew the younger brothers and sisters better. They were children when we lived in that house.
I remember James pumping gas at Selmen's gas station when it was fifty cents a gallon. I was still living in Brookeland but working in Jasper.

I honestly can't say I knew Tom. I remember he was a very handsome young man with black hair. He was four years older than I, therefore he was gone from his Aunt Bessie's before I grew up enough to know him except by sight and speeking to him occasionally when I did see him.

Yet, when I read his obituary tears came to my eyes for the man he became and the boy I never knew enough.
I have signed many guest books but never one with any other entries. Tom's guest book is full. What a tribute.
I know you, his family and friends, will miss him so very much, and surprisingly I will miss him too though I haven't thought of him in years.
May God Bless all of you.

I only knew Tom for a short time although we did cross pathes many years ago ( I was a painter at Steeplechase for a short time). In the short time I knew Tom this go-around I really grew a lot of respect for the man. Tom and I visited the last time I saw him for about 2 hours. The time slipped away on us .We talked about some business, some of lifes challenges and whole lot about hunting . Well if you know me you would know he was a man after my own heart. Tom had a way of making everybody feel good about themselves and that he actually cared about their lifes. We will all miss Tom. I have been in the local body shop community for over 26 years and never have I witnessed so many people touched , like I have with the loss of Tom. Again, we will all miss him. God bless Tom,his family, friends and business associates.

Sincerely,

If we are very very lucky, we have a man like Tom Ferguson in our lives. He was the epitomy of kindness, integrity, and sincerity. A truly honorable man. For us, he was a friend that had no equal. To the extended family of Tom,
Many are the days of youth gone by, but the found memories of friends and mentors remain. Friend foremost was Tom. Mentor to me as a 17 year old kid with his first job at Tasco #6 on Hillcroft 1977. Many a lesson learned from a man great in heart and soul. Blessings and lessons were bestowed by God through Tom. Happy are the ones that know salvation, for they know they will see Tom again.

I already miss Tom making his way up the stairs to give us words of encouragement with a smile or to share his sense of humor with us to ease the cares and stress of the day away. I could have never imagined working under someone who would possess half the qualities that Tom masterfully displayed on a daily basis. I will be forever grateful to him for opening the door for me and inviting me into his wonderful families. I have had the pleasure of meeting his family who was around for all aspects of his life as well as the family he created throughout the years with open arms, compassion, hard work, and the love that he shared with us all. Tom will truly be missed and forever remembered by the masses with as many lives as he has touched. So until the next time we meet I pray that he may rest in peace.

It is with great sadness that I write this after hearing of your passing. I had heard that you were ill but had no idea that God would be taking you home so soon. I wish that I would have taken time to thank you for the difference that you made in my life. You made the banking business much more than just a business. I took comfort in reading that you had instilled your values in your children. Those are great values to have. I had the opportunity to visit with a couple of your right hand men on my visit to Houston earlier this year and was more than impressed with thier business savy. They told me that they had been with you for quite a while and I cound sense the Ferguson training in our business dealings. I take great comfort in knowing that the business that you poured your life into is in such capable hands. I look forward to talking to you again some day. we will have a lot to catch up on. I pray for your family and friends.

Tom, I am going to miss you so very much, you have been like a father to me in all the ways that are important. Their are so many memories. It will be hard not to walk in your office and not be able to sit and just chitchat anymore. I love you and will miss you terribly. Thank you so much for being a blessing in my life. And to his family, he was a true friend, and blessing to many, I am sincerely sorry for your loss and know many grieve with you. He was an awesome friend and dear to many hearts and will be greatly missed.

I didn't know Tom all that long but you get the sense it didn't take Tom long to get to know you. With that warm smile and handshake he would welcome so many into his world. May God bless and keep you always.

Uncle Tom,
I loved you more than words could ever express. You were such a terrific role model for all your children, nieces, and nephews and will be missed beyond all belief. Your obituary portrays your life perfectly. You've left big shoes to fill! I know you are watching down on us from Heaven and I am thankful to know that I have such a wonderful guardian angel. You will live on in my heart forever and I am so grateful for all my fond memories with you.

I Love You,

Your Niece, Brooksy

It was a privelege to know Tom and to have him as part of my life because we shared many of life's problems. However, we both we both found the love of Christ who turned our worlds around. I bless Tom and will truly miss his kinship. I know he is at peace and in a better place that the Lord has prepared for all of us. May all of the family feel the presence of God during this time of mourning and grieving.
