Bruce Dvm Obituary

Bruce Ferguson, DVM
Bruce Ferguson, DVM, MS, age 62, passed away December 31, 2019 after a long and valiant battle with disease. Dr. Ferguson was an internationally recognized leading authority in the field of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. He was an instructor at the Chi Institute in Reddick, Florida and a practicing veterinarian in St Augustine, Florida. He lectured around the world and published many learned treatises. His work touched thousands of lives and improved the care of both large and small animals through acupuncture and herbal medicine. In addition, Bruce promoted and supported environmental causes, taught wilderness first aid (for humans and animals), lead Sierra Club outings and most especially enjoyed a day canoeing on most any river in central Florida. Bruce was also an accomplished martial artist who attained the rank of Nidan in Shotokan karate before his devotions turned to the Chinese internal arts of Qi Gong and Tai Chi Chuan. Bruce is survived by his wife Suzanne Hughes-Ferguson, his mother Carol Richards and his brother Keith Ferguson.

It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we were recently informed of Bruce’s death.
We first came across Dr Bruce Fergusson at Murdoch University. Our regular vet Dr Nikki Kirkwood had made the recommendation.
Bruce cared for our two boys – Sergie and Louis (blue healer beagle cross) whom had been diagnosed with IBD. Compassionate, funny, gentle and one of the most experienced and knowledgeable vets we had the pleasure to meet.
It is because of Bruce’s great enthusiasm and joy that we pursued this TCM path with our two dogs with great success.
The world was a better place because of you and your compassion to the gifts that you shared liberally with others.
In our family you will be remembered with such fondness and hold a special place.
Our condolences to Bruce’s family and friends.

To Bruce's family and friends:
I have just come across this very saddening notice of Bruce's passing as I searched the internet wondering where this gifted and compassionate vet was these days.
Bruce cared for our Lhasa Apso, Lamu from 2011 to 2013 when he was at Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia.
We so appreciated the quality of his care of of Lamu - and of us - and his TCM knowledge and skill.
Following one of our early consultations, we we were inspired to email Bruce these words from William Blake, which I offer now in tribute to this special human being:
To see the world in a grain of sand,
and to see heaven in a wild flower,
hold infinity in the palm of your hands,
and eternity in an hour.
With kindest thoughts,
Alison Ashton

While we did not know Bruce well, our family will miss seeing his smiling face as he traveled the neighborhood on his bike with Karen and the dogs alongside. Godspeed Bruce and thank you for your service.

As a neighbor and Vet. , Bruce will be greatly missed. We remember fondly his help and care when our golden retriever Louie was battling tumors. A trip to his Chi Institute was a great experience. We especially remember too when Karen was used as an experiment for acupuncture practice there. God speed Bruce!

My husband and I, along with our neighborhood, will miss Bruce's smiling face as he rode his bicycle, with his wife Suzanne, walking their two beautiful greyhound dogs. He was always open to helping us with any questions about our own dog's well being.
He was a blessing, and he will be missed.

I remember Dr. Ferguson when he practiced in St. Augustine and also many years ago, I took my animals to him in the Micanopy area. He was intelligent, kind and insightful. I am saddened to hear of his death.
