Freda Armstrong Obituary
Freda Armstrong, St. Augustine, wife of legendary University of Denver hockey coach and NHL star Murray Armstrong, died of heart failure on March 24, 2011. She was 97.
She was known to her friends as Sis. Sis and Murray were inseparable until his death Dec. 8, 2010. They met in her hometown, Syracuse, N.Y., while he was playing for an NHL farm team and were married seven years later in 1942.
One of her fondest memories was the Detroit Red Wings' 1943 championship in which Murray played. "I got to drink Champagne from the Stanley Cup," she said.
They retired to Venice, Fla., in 1977 and in 2000, moved to St. Augustine to be closer to their son and his wife. Sis was an enthusiastic golfer and played regularly at St. Augustine Shores Golf Club until she was 95, when back and balance problems forced her to quit.
She is survived by her son, Rob, a Flagler College professor.
Memorial donations should be directed to Community Hospice Foundation, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257.
