Harold Hendry Jr.

Harold Hendry Jr., 72, passed away on July 26, 2016, at his home in Elkton, Florida. He was born in Orlando, Florida, and grew up in City Point near Cocoa. He attended Cocoa High School and Brevard Junior College before enlisting in the Air Force in 1967. He later served as vice president of the Independent Life Insurance Co. in Jacksonville. He built Fish Island Marina in St. Augustine during the '70s and he operated it until his retirement in 2016.
Harold loved hunting, fishing, scuba diving, flying and surfing. An adventurer, he once flew his Stearman biplane from California to Florida.
He was an experienced sailor and often sailed to the Bahamas, including a trip taking a team of scientists from the Smithsonian to study animal fossils. He also built a home in Eleuthera, Bahamas, where he enjoyed frequent visits.
In more recent years, Harold and his wife have spent summers and fall at their cabin in Highlands, North Carolina, and winters in Elkton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Hendry Sr. and Virginia Young Hendry, and his sister, Virginia Hendry.
He is survived by his wife, Maura Barrett Hendry; two sons, Shad (Kristen) and Jake Hendry; three grandsons, Wyatt, George and Jack Hendry; and cousin, Alan Hendry.
A memorial service at Fish Island Marina will be held on a later date.
