Jan was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1952. Following her diplomatic service family, she received her primary and secondary education in Lebanon, Libya, Tunisia and Israel, as well as Bethesda, Md. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Indiana and her Master of Business Administration degree from New York University. Jan's varied working career was governed by a staunch commitment to social and economic justice. This found expression over almost 30 years in many ways. She was a labor union organizer in the 70s. In 1982, she co-authored a study of Connecticut brass workers, published by Temple University Press. For over a decade in the New York state government and in the private sector she worked to assure and expand employment opportunities for all workers. For three years prior to her death, Jan was director of the membership department of Local 1199 of the Service Employees International Union, New York's largest health workers union. Outside her work Jan had a variety of interests. She enjoyed New York's arts scene, especially the theater arts. She was an enthusiastic supporter of New York's womens' professional basketball team, the Liberty. She enjoyed jazz, and travel both abroad, and several times a year, to Stockbridge to be with friends there. Friends will remember Jan as loyal and dedicated. Her family knew her as loving and warm. Friends and family both know she used well her precious moments on this earth.

I dated Jan for a while we attended AIS. She was a warm, cheerful, loving and loyal friend. I'm devastated at the news of her passing in such tragic circumstances. RIP Jan, Mickey
