Mona Carr Obituary

Mona Lee Carr passed away at the age of 81 with her family at her side. She was born Mona Lee Wolfe on October 20, 1936 in the small coal-mining town of Indiana, PA to La Burn Obediah & Violet F. Wolfe. The family moved to New Smyrna Beach while Mona was still in high school. Mona attended and graduated from New Smyrna Beach High School ("NSBHS") where she was also a cheerleader. It was at NSBHS that she met the one who won her heart. Bill Carr. They were married on September 12, 1955 and went on to have four children – Billy, Debbie, Mike and Teresa. They lived in several cities before finally moving the family to St. Augustine in 1973. While here, Mona was a very active volunteer at the local schools and the community at large. She was an avid reader in a town not known for it's expansive library system. She grew impatient with this, so, in the late 70s, Mona joined the nascent "Friends of The Library". She would go on to become an award-winning member of that organization and her efforts helped create what we now know as the main branch of the St. Johns County Library. Her love of reading would sometimes lead to her finishing a book in one night. She was everyone's favorite Trivia partner. She loved animals, the environment and was a proud Democrat. Mona loved to travel and experience new things. She ventured through Europe and journeyed across much of the USA. Come Christmas-time, she was in her element and enjoyed cooking big holiday meals. Mona's Santa Clause collection is the stuff of legend. She was a giver and a child spoiler, so this holiday was very fitting for her. While the kids were growing up, her house was often the place where all of the neighborhood kids would gather; bands would practice in the garage and skit night props were made on her back porch; all with little complaint. She was everybody's Mom and it didn't matter who you were, what you looked like or who you loved. After the kids had grown, she spent a lot of time visiting them and going with them to concerts, the theater, sporting events and cultural events. She loved to listen to music and her tastes were eclectic and spanned many genres and generations. Mona loved to laugh and her laugh was infectious, which then created more laughter. She loved her grandchildren more than life itself. You would often find her reading to them or with them and sometimes dancing with them (and definitely spoiling them). At the grandchildren's ball games, Mona would generously, offer her advice as well as her glasses to the officiating staff. In the end, Mona would often place the well being of others ahead of herself and went out of her way to support those around her in their personal endeavors.
Mona was preceded in death by her parents as well as siblings Bob, Lillian and Buddy. Mona Lee Carr is survived by her husband William E.S. Carr, PhD and her sister Kathy Jo. She is also survived by her children & grandchildren, William E.S Carr Jr. (Francis), Deborah K.S. Carr (Nancy), J. Michael S. Carr (Girlfriend- Deborah West) and Teresa Carr Dillinger (Terry); Grandchildren: James S. Carr, Liam G. Dillinger, Marlee R. Dillinger and Great-Granddaughter, Jillian G. Carr.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Book Mobile, a reading program or your local PBS station.
A Celebration of her Life will be held on Saturday, June 30th from 12pm to 3pm at Creekside Dinery, 160 Nix Boat Yard Rd, St. Augustine, FL 32084. All friends and family are welcome.

To the Carr family, I am so very sorry for your loss. Back in the early 90's, I got to know Mona via cleaning her house. The Santa collection, wow!! She was such an amazing lady and I loved listening to all her stories and she just glowed when speaking of her children. She was so proud of each of you. I remember when she got to see Elton John in concert, she was just so excited. My condolences to all of you.
