Mr. Shivers was my boss when I was in my mid-20s, both at the original SHIVERS BARBECUE on San Marco (right around the corner from my old house!) and at the other SHIVERS BARBECUE in Palatka back in the mid-90s. I worked for him full-time for about two years. He was a GOOD MAN to work for: fair, honest and VERY hard-working (working from morning until night for many YEARS) and he made the BEST barbecue this Damn Yankee ever ate. And when I worked for him, I never paid for a meal. He sold my old friend BIGFOOT (who also worked for him) his boat-size Lincoln Mark V and that was a sweet ride! Those were the days. Godspeed Mr. Shivers. RIP

Our fondest memories are of Bill smiling at Shivers BBQ. It was Jake's coffee stop throughout his Jake's Appliance Service workday AND our family go to place for a wonderful meal. Those times, Bill always made us feel like "family." TC's great peach cobbler and Bill's smile and chuckle were part of us! Bill you will be missed and remembered as a good guy who helped so many. Rest in peace, you touched many lives with your kindness. Prayers and sympathy to the family.

We are so sorry to read about our long time friend Bill Shivers passing.
I first met "Bill" in 1962 when we were applying for a college course. A few years later our paths crossed again when we were taking a physical to work for the Florida East Coast Railroad and then we worked side by side for about four years. My wife and I introduced Bill to his future wife Linda Hall. We also joined the National Guard together and served together for several years. Bill and Linda married and they moved away with a company until they decided they wanted to live back in St. Augustine when "Russell's BBQ came available they moved back. While the deal was working Bill and Linda with us for several months. Yes Bill old Buddy you were one of a kind and we loved you dearly. So My friend rest in peace and where ever you are I know you are making and selling the "FAMOUS SHIVER'S SECERT BBQ SAUCE".

My family met Mr. Shivers when we ate at Shiver's BBQ our first night in St. Augustine after moving here from Virginia in June of 1973. My parents became friends with Mr. Shivers and his restaurant became one of our favorite places to eat over the years. My parents moved in June of 1978, but I continued to eat every week at Shiver's BBQ until its closing, especially on Thursdays for their daily special. Mr. Bill was a very kind man and wonderful person. My prayers are with all of his family, loved ones, and his wonderful Ms. Pat. May God's precious gift of memories comfort you all in the midst of your loss.
