We were neighbors in Grimm Hall at University of Wisconsin River Falls. We often would share stories about the great outdoors.

Mr. Baneck was my 5th and 6th grade teacher at Vesper. He had a way of making his students passionate about their work! He truly cared about each student and wanted them to be successful. He brought nature and wildlife into the classroom, which is usually an overlooked subject in schools. He truly made a difference in this world and I feel blessed to have crossed paths with him.

Our sympathies to you Bryan and Kevin. Steve was so generous with his garden. We also had good conversations when he would drop off his venison for Ron! Always had a smile for you.

This really saddens me. What a great man and incredible teacher! I was privileged to have have him as a 6th grade teacher at grant... he always had a great story to tell whenever I would see him. Hell be missed

I'm writing this more as a reminder to all of us, including myself, to make good use of the time we have left.
I've known Steve since his youngest son Kevin was 9 years old. I coached Kevin's soccer team for 2 years. His former spouse was my Team Manager for those 2 years. A few years later his son Bryan was my Assistant Coach for a season for my eldest daughter's team in Stevens Point.
Within the past few months, I've seen Steve every now and again. His house is on my way home from work. While driving home from our up north Opening Fishing weekend 2 and half weeks ago I get a text from Bryan. "Dad isn't doing good." I got home, disconnected the boat, unpacked a couple things, and headed over to their house. I learned my lesson on another older friend a few years ago. The Doctor's estimate of time remaining is rarely accurate. I had the opportunity to say good bye and visit one last time with a friend who was dying. Difficult, to say the least. But much more rewarding (I like to believe for both of us) than doing it at the Funeral Home.
All the pictures my wife and I post on Facebook of big pan fish that we've caught through the ice, I attribute to the knowledge Steve passed along to me. Looking back, it was like I had access to my own personal Ice Fishing Trainer.
Steve was heavily involved with stocking Muskies on our local lake. A few years back, while fishing with my Dad, I lost the biggest fish I ever felt on a fishing line in one of these local lakes using a 90 lb test, 4 strand titanium wire, live sucker harness. I had a 17" sucker hanging over the boat. My Dad and I were in total shock of the power of this fish. Needless to say, the sucker harness broke during the battle. That night I called Steve. I told him, "The stocking program from the 90's is working." I shared my story with him. 3 days later, he comes over to my house with a homemade sucker harness that I swear could hold me hanging from a rafter. I put it on a hook on the pegboard in my shop with the note he wrote. Kept it there as a reminder that when Musky fishing you have to do everything right to catch the monsters. That homemade sucker harness is still there today. I never did use it. Steve my friend, I will do my level best to catch a monster on that rig this year in your honor. Godspeed and good fishing to you!!

I mentioned I would like a maple tree to Steve, and you guessed it, he showed up last fall with a 6 foot maple tree. I didn't think the tree would survive because it didn't have what I would consider, enough roots, but we watered as long as we could and this spring it's budding! Thank you Steve ,as we enjoy this tree we will always think of you.
