I just read of Alex's passing in the MU Alumni magazine. I never knew Alex very well, but we started school at the same time and I always saw him around campus, we had classes together, then we ended up TA'ing together at the business school while I was in law school and Alex was finishing his MBA. I just wanted you to know how much Alex was full of life, always smiling, and making jokes with his dry sense of humor. He touched many people's lives during his time at MU--even people like me who never got to know him well enough to call him a friend. I'm so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Words can't express the ache we feel in our hearts for your tragic loss. Brad & Jan, you have been treasured friends to us during our 30+ years in STL - I can't imagine anything you wouldn't do for us. I remember the joys you experienced when the boys were born. And now as you grieve, may God's comforting arms surround you and help to ease the pain. Laura and I pray for peace in your family, and for strength to go forward. Max has made us Tiger fans (except when they're playing the Cards!), and it is a joy to watch him succeed.

Alex

Your Ohio family misses you greatly...but we treasure the memories you created here. Jennie and I loved being with you; Jeff simply adored you. Your wit and astonishing intellect were things it took me years to fully understand and appreciate. The love and gentle caring for animals you demonstrated was a testament to the true nature of your soul. Your physical presence may be gone but your kind spirit survives and is warmly felt by us here. Much love to you from Jennie, Eric, Evan, baby Emily...Jeff, Zhenia, Jake, and baby Jordan.

The Scherzer Family,

I have many dear memories of Alex during middle school and high school. One of my favorites is being on the newspaper staff with him. When I was the sports editor of the paper, I posted a final four prediction for the NCAA tourney and because I didn't spend time doing the bracket, he pointed out that it was logistically impossible for that outcome to happen and it had already been printed and sent out to the entire school. We had a great laugh about that. I also remember the long summers of pch baseball and legion ball. My heart goes out to you Alex and your family. You are in my prayers.

I am sad to hear about your son's death. I know that mothers everywhere feel your pain, and although I cannot know what your heart is feeling, I can be here to listen, hold your hand, or just be with you if you need me. Jan, you are such a precious classmate, and I so enjoyed seeing your bright smile at our reunion. You are in my heart and mind with prayers for comfort, rest and peace. God bless you and hold you close today and always. Love, Pat Jackson Huskey

Dear Scherzer family,
I met Alex my senior year at Mizzou and we became fast friends through a shared love of sports; especially baseball. We kept in touch over the last 4 years, usually texting to discuss the latest baseball news or our fantasy draft strategies. Alex was one of the smartest and most confident people that I've ever met and I respected his wide-ranging knowledge and ability to debate any topic very much. Everything that Max said on Tuesday in his statement about Alex rang 100% true about the person I knew. I have never met Brad, Jan, or Max, but my thoughts are very much with you all during this extremely difficult time in your lives. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Max, I lost my sister at a young age. From reading the comments, Alex sounds a lot like her. Smart, funny, a smile that could light up a room. I will never doubt your courage, from what I saw on Saturday. Hang in there, and remember the good times you had with Alex. He's looking down upon you, and with you every day.

Brad and Jan, I can't imagine losing my daughter, so I can only imagine what you're going through. I pray for the two of you.

Max, as a loyal Tigers fan I follow all of your games. My heart broke for you when I heard about your loss. I can only imagine what your whole family must be going through. I wrote this poem for you and your brother. I hope it brings some small measure of comfort during these trying times.

Though hurt and sorrow may linger in my heart
And anger at the world, for tearing us apart
I never shall forget the times I had with you
The jokes we used to laugh at, the things we used to do
And though my spirit grows heavy with sorrow and pain
And my tears fall to the ground like so many drops of rain
I'll always have the memories of the love you gave to me
And all the times you helped completely selflessly
And though the world without you may seem a darker place
I always will remember you with a smile on your face
And though our years together were far, far too few
I'll hold you in my heart and keep on loving you.

A Reason, a Season, or a Lifetime People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. When you figure out which one it is, you will know what to do for each person. When someone is in your life for a REASON . . . It is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally, or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend, and they are! They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrong doing on your part, or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away. Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered. And now it is time to move on. When people come into your life for a SEASON . . . Because your turn has come to share, grow, or learn. They bring you an experience of peace, or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it! It is real! But, only for a season. LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons; things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person, and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life. It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant. I felt like my life was spiraling out of control, but one of the things which always helped me forget about my troubles for a few hours was watching you pitch for the Tigers. You inspired me and helped me get through a very difficult time in my life, and now I'm so sorry that you have to go through something a thousand times worse than anything I ever experienced.
