Alice Voss Obituary

Voss, Alice Marie 83, beloved widow of Rev. Hans A. Voss, entered the Church Triumphant on Sunday, September 9, passing peacefully at Sunrise of Raleigh, attended by family and loving caregivers. She was born November 8, 1923 in Marshalltown, Iowa, to George and Emma (Emde) Kuhlman, and grew up in St. Louis, MO. Alice was predeceased by her two sisters, Ruth Roschke and Doris Klinger. Alice married Rev. Hans A. Voss of Saginaw, MI, on October 6, 1945. Together they served Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod congregations for 58 years; Trinity in Westerly, RI; Trinity in Morris Plains, NJ; Immanuel in Danbury, CT; and Our Redeemer in New Ipswich, NH. They retired to Wake Forest, NC, in 1996 and enjoyed supporting the development of Hope Lutheran Church there. Alice was the beloved mother of eight children: Peggy and husband David Ruopp of Raleigh, NC; Karen and husband Gary Sardone of Danbury, CT; Jean Sorokin of Pasadena, CA; John Voss of Cary, NC; Martin Voss (deceased); Robert Voss of Frederick, MD; Timothy Voss and wife Pattie of St. Louis, MO; and Mark Voss and wife Suzanne of Adamstown, MD. She was the beloved grandmother of twenty-three, including St. Louis residents Dylan, Zachary, Lilia and Ethan; and was great-grandmother of six. She was the beloved Aunt of Barbara and husband Ted Barlag of Columbia, MO; and Marilyn and husband Dennis Bettenhausen, also of Columbia; and beloved cousin to many in the St. Louis metro area. She has given us a rich heritage of faith and joy in the Lord to be shared with others. Her life centered on church and family. She designed beautiful Biblical and liturgical banners. She served on boards of various church groups, especially LWML. Her creative imagination made Bible stories come alive for preschoolers and persons with special needs. Children loved to spend time at her house because she was inventive at recycling 'junk' into toys and craft projects. Even with such a large family to care for, her door was open, coffee and goodies ready in the kitchen, and room for at least one more at the table. We thank God for her life and love, and we look forward to our heavenly reunion!Services: Visiting hours are Thursday, Sept. 13, 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury, CT. Funeral and committal will begin at 11 a.m., September 14 at Immanuel Lutheran Church and Cemetery in Danbury, CT. Remembrances may be written at www.cornellmemorial.com. Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Church Extension Fund, PO Box 229009, St Louis MO 63122-9009.
