Gary Baranyai Obituary

Baranyai, Gary Allan June 29, 2014, Suddenly and Tragically taken from us. Dear husband of Donna Baranyai, loving father of Jaime (Travis) Mowers and Kelly Baranyai, beloved brother of Bonnie Paulsmeyer, cherished uncle to Amy Paulsmeyer (Jim) Harfst and Brian (Katie) Paulsmeyer, special buddy of great-nieces (Vivian, Carilynn) and great-nephews (Emmett, Adam, Kyle); our dear uncle, cousin, Goon Squad buddy, and friend to all who knew him. Gary was born on September 15, 1948 (65 years old). He was his sister's 2nd birthday present, born just one day after her birthday. He lived in Maplewood as a child and attended Sutton School, MRH Jr. High School and graduated from the Maplewood Richmond Heights School District in 1966. He received a B.S. in Education from Central Missouri State University and got a Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling from UMSL in 1976. Gary worked hard all of his life. He was a salesman for Josten's, Reynolds Aluminum, Moeller-Reimer, and finally Alside where he worked from 1992 to April 1, 2011, when he retired. Gary was a very proud Marine once a Marine, always a Marine! He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1971-1973. He was stationed in San Diego, and when he graduated from recruit training on June 16, 1971, he was awarded the American Spirit Honor Medal which is the nation's highest recruit award. A newspaper article at the time said, PFC Baranyai was lauded as being an inspiration to his fellow recruits through his actions, attitudes, and devotion to duty. It was in the Marines that Gary began his love of sky diving, a passion that led to him make 2,317 jumps. He felt free in the air and enjoyed every moment. Besides just the intense joy of free fall, he also loved the camaraderie of his sky diving friends, especially the Goon Squad. There were four of them- Gary, Calvin, Mark, and Mike. The remaining Goon Squad members will be dispersing his ashes from 12,000 feet- something Gary wanted- to fly one more time. Gary also enjoyed scuba diving, swing dancing, driving his 1956 Thunderbird, and collecting model trains and vintage toys. Recently he found peace and tranquility at his country home, The Sky Dance Ranch. We will never forget Gary's amazing signature laugh. Our family will always remember the fun and laughter we had every Christmas when we played Rob Your Neighbor, a family tradition started by Gary's Mom. Family was very important to Gary. His devotion to his wife and girls was beyond measure. Even his extended family knew he was always there for them. When Gary entered the room he brought sunshine with him. He gave hugs, made people laugh, and always brought joy and love to everyone in his presence. The world has truly lost one of the greatest, kindest souls there ever was. Services: Following Gary's wishes, he was cremated with no visitation. A Memorial Service will be held at his church, Christ Church, United Church of Christ (2200 Bellevue, Maplewood, MO) at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 11, 2014. Immediately following the church service, according to Gary's wishes, there will be a celebration of life memorial. Memorial donations may be made to the U.S. Marine Corp Toys for Tots at www.toysfortots.org (or by mail to Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, Gift Processing Administrator, 18251 Quantico Gateway Drive, Triangle, VA 22172) or the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org (or by mail to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Not sure what to say?

OMG; I just came across this announcement in an internet search for Gary. We knew each other for many years in Saint Louis as close skydiving buddies and I came to know Donna through him. Pleasant and fond images and memories of both of you have surfaced over the years. Please accept my belated sympathies for your loss and well-wishes for your future. He was definitely a remarkable spirit who enriched my life!

Gary and I served together in the same battalion at Camp Pendleton. He was a dear friend and a fine fellow Marine. He taught me to respect body builders and I talked him into his first jump out of a perfectly good airplane. While we have not spoken for many years, I am sure that he was a wonderful, loving, and happy husband, father, family member and friend. I know that he will be dearly missed by all whose lives he graced. Godspeed to you Gary and my sincere condolences to your loving family and friends.

I went to school with Gary at Central Missouri State and we were roommates for little over a year. I just was thinking about making contact with him and found this obituary.

I met and traded with Gary over many years when he was with Alside. He always shared sage advice. Gary expressed his great love for Donna many years ago when he commissioned me to build a for her a large country style cabinet. He beamed in anticipation before presenting it to Donna. Gary will be truly missed.

Gary's light will continue to shine in heaven and all the angels will love his laughter as he's given all of us. God Bless you and give you peace.

He was my favorite rep that called on Amazing Siding. A great honorable man and will be missed.

Gary was a long time sales rep for Amazing Siding and a good honest friend. He took this photo about 6-8 years ago. I've never met a happier person.

I met Gary several years ago through his train collecting. He would come into our family store--Train Town--to see what trains we recently brought in. I will always remember his laugh. It was great! I would always try and say something humorous to get him to laugh. It was one of a kind and infectious. He was always in a good mood no matter what. Last year he told us that he "had bought the farm" literally. He told us about his property he recently purchased and we laughed about it. He was a very nice guy and I will miss seeing him at the store.

I have never known, nor will I, person as unique as Gary Baranyai. We met through skydiving and built a wonderful friendship over 22 years.

His warmth, humor and sincerity were a magnet for everyone he touched. To be with Gary was to be uplifted. A bright light has been extinguished for those he would have encountered but will live on in the memory of his many friends and family.

Our sympathy, thoughts and prayers are with you Donna, Jaime and Kelly. May your grief turn into wonderful memories of a truly special dad and spouse and a singular human being.

Donna- My wife and I are passing through MO on a way to a wedding. I knew Gary from college where he introduced me to weightlifting. I have thought about him frequently over the last 40 years. I don't know what made me want to contact him now, but we looked him up on the internet and saw he passed away. In Nov 1970, Gary was my bestman at my wedding. In the very short time I spent with him in the weight room and grad school, I can only tell you that I loved him dearly. His laugh and those tremendous "lats" were his signature. My sincerest condolences to you and your family. Bob Krom, email, [email protected].... Grahamsville, NY

My cousin and I shared many moments discussing in person and on line our concerns about this great country of ours. His dedication and understanding of what is happening showed his Semper Fi (Always faithful) attitude towards his country remained after his service. His family loyalty and actions no doubt helped his children over many obstacles they faced, he inspired us all.

Gary always had a smile and seemed genuinely pleased to be with you. His welcoming spirit was evident whenever I was in his company at family gatherings. His concern for my Aunt Millie and Uncle Carl endeared him to me in a special way. My dear Donna, this comes with much loving care and deepest sympathy for you and your precious daughters. Love, Judy Rebmann

Gary's warmth and love of people were always present whenever we had the chance to share time with him. His care and goodness to our Uncle Carl and Aunt Millie, both who loved him dearly, made a special place in our hearts for him. All that he was, will remain in the legacy of his two beautiful daughters. He lives in them. God has prepared a place for him...one that is much better than here. We love you, Donna, and carry you in our hearts with prayers and loving thoughts. Love, Gary and Jeanne McDonald

Gary had a heart as big as his laugh. Although he has been taken from us far too soon, God has bigger plans for him. There is a party going on in heaven now. You will be missed Gary but your spirit will live on.
