Thought and prayers to you and your family. Dr. Hess was the most caring person that I knew. I will always remember when he went up to see my dad Tommy Fox in step-down at MBMC right after he had one of his treatments. That meant the world to me and my dad. He is one of the finest men I know. Sincerely Khris Hembrock

My Dear Friend John,
You and I were together in freshman Homeroom 109 at SLUH when we first met 54 years ago just last month. And you were always such a NICE GUY in every sense of that phrase. I have only seen you a few times since we graduated from SLUH together half a century ago, but every time you were GOOD as you had always been.
We will have our 50th SLUH reunion two weeks from this coming weekend. We will remember you, John, especially at the Mass we will celebrate on Friday night. However, I like to think of you as not being absent, but rather you will be up on the altar with Mike Barber, Wally Sidney and myself in a very special way.
Your friend, your classmate,

John was my classmate and friend at Tulane Medical School, Charity Hospital residency, and work to improve scholarship at Tulane. I will miss his cheerful smile but know that his strong Catholic faith was with him to the end. I believe he is in Heaven and my prayers go Cindy and his family to accept this great loss.

Faithful servant, gifted physician. Saved my Daddy's life not once, but twice. Dr. Hess always had a special place in my heart. (AND MY DAD'S) He lived down the street and worked at the greenhouse. When he walked in to save my dad it was amazing. Seems a bit odd that my father who is 82 outlived the man who was his cardiologist but that is a testament to his fine work. Rest in peace Dr. Hess. Thank you for all you did for my family. Blessings to the Hess family.

I first met Dr. Hess back in the early 80's working in the ICU at Incarnate Word Hospital. I learned right away that he was the kindest and most caring Cardiologist there was in St. Louis. I learned so much from him. A few years later I had the pleasure of working with him at Missouri Baptist and then at Town and Country Cardiology. He always greated me with a smile and always asked how I was doing. Such a great man that will be missed dearly. Prayers for peace and comfort for the entire Hess family. God Bless each of you.

I was lucky enough to have been John's classmate at St. Louis U. High and his roommate in our senior year at Notre Dame. I remember the wrenching sorrow that John could not shake after his own father died much too young, and I feel a share of that sorrow now myself. Among our high school friends, mockery was the currency, but all we could mock in John was his ridiculous generosity. One joke went like this, "Hey, John, can I borrow your car later this afternoon?" "Well, Rich, I was going to take my mom to the doctor, but here are the keys: you take the car, I can just carry her to the doctor's office. It's not all that far." One of our college roommates, Phil Krill, said of John, "He makes Plato look like a savage." And so he did. He was a sweet soul. My corner of the world is sadder in his absence.

Dr. Hess took fabulous care of my mother, made her feel like an individual and not just another patient. He was kind and informative to me as a care taker and always respectful. He always went out of his way and called whether bad or good news. I can only imagine if we feel his loss so acutely how the rest of his family may feel his loss. I feel fortune to have met him, that my mom got care from him.
I am so sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you all.
The world lost a beautiful human being. May you revel in the beautiful memories you made as you mourn a beutiful soul knowing many people are praying for you.

John was among eight of us who lived together in Sorin Hall at Notre Dame in 1969-70 in an arrangement we ambitiously called The Polis. Reading the remarkable testimonials assembled here, it's clear that The Polis wasn't the only place he'd end up as the kindest person in the room.

Privileged to know this man. So kind. So gifted. Sooo funny. Working in the cath lab:
Ann: " Dr Hess what was it that they used to call electo-mechanical dissociation?
Dr Hess: Well, Ann, I guess they would call that asta la vista."
There was always something purely amazing about this wonderful man. One of the top five reasons I'm glad to have chosen to be a nurse.

I am at a loss of words to explain how sad I am about the passing of Dr. Hess. He was an amazing man that helped so many people and raised incredible children. I met Dr. Hess a few times and his love for his family was undeniable. He took a profound interest in each of his children's friends and truly made people feel special. I will never forget Lizzie detailing tales of Dr. Hess putting on a brilliant "light show" in their backyard and the visits to Cincinnati in the "chariot". All my love to the Hess family and Dr. Hess' friends. He will be sorely missed.

Dr Hess saved my life. I was in the ICU at MOBAP after having spent quite a long time in the ER. The pain level in my chest was 10+ and not going away. No one seemed to know what my problem was.
Then Dr Hess became involved. It wasn't long before he had me in the CCL and had discovered an ascending aortic aneurysm. He got the cardiac surgeons involved and soon we were running to the OR. Some amazing people saved my life that day starting with Dr Hess. After that he became my cardiologist and my friend. I have never in my life met a more truly humble person. He served mankind. He made a difference. He will definitely be missed.

Dr. Hess' Family,
My family and I are so deeply sorry for the loss of this wonderful human being. He was my cardiologist for over 30 years and during every appointment, he would always take the time to ask how all of the members of our family were doing. My Father, Mother and my grand parents all saw Dr. Hess and knew him when he was with Dr. Owen back in Florissant. He was truly a great and compassionate doctor and an equally wonderful man. It was wonderful to have been a patient of his and my prayers go out to his entire family.
Best Regards,

I referred patients to Dr.Hess for 25+ years. He was a true physician in every sense of the word-skillful, hardworking, tremendous bedside manner, and if someone was hurting financially it made no difference to him. All the hearts he fixed, today, have a collective hole in them as they and all of medicine have lost a tremendous cardiologist and dear friend. My prayers and deepest sympathies go out to family.

I first met John in 1980. He was a great physician, but he was an even better person. He always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. He was a true gentleman, with a great sense of humor, and tenderheartedness for his fellow man. My life was better because I knew him. The world is a more gloomy place today.
