Lawrence Kahn Obituary

Kahn, MD, Lawrence

aged 101, passed away on October 11, 2022. He was preceded in death by his wife of 75 years, Jane

Sherman Kahn. He is survived by

his children Susan (the late Neil) Kahn Bromberg of St. Louis, Robert (Fiona Duff) Kahn of NYC, and

Thomas Kahn of St. Louis; his

grandchildren Ingrid Bromberg

Kennedy, Kenneth Bromberg, and

Kiki Kahn and his great-grand-

daughter Lila Kennedy.

Born in NYC on July 16, 1921, he grew up in Gadsden, Alabama, and Norwich, NY. He graduated from the University of Alabama and received his MD from LSU. He trained at St. Louis Children's Hospital, where he served as Chief of Staff. He was a pediatrician in private practice before becoming a full-time Professor of Pediatrics at Washington University School of Medicine, researching the quality and ethics of healthcare delivery. He was the first Medical Director of the Medical Care Group and started the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program in St. Louis.

He had wide and varied interests. A founder of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, he taught classes in architecture and a wide range of literature, including every Shakespeare play - a passion for the playwright he developed in college. In addition, he served on the first St. Louis Shakespeare Festival board. A fine writer, he published both fiction and non-fiction. As a teenager, he attended the Art Students League in NYC and produced sculptures throughout his life. He volunteered at the Missouri Botanical Garden Library, researching the rare book collection. He loved the outdoors - camping, fishing, and shooting. He was self-effacing, funny, gracious, and kind.

Services: A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Washington University, 9 N Jackson, St. Louis, MO 63105 or the Peter Raven Library of the Missouri Botanical Garden, 4344 Shaw Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63110.

Built the house in LADUE that Docs kid Robert designed with BOA Construction some 35 yrs or so ago.I continued to care for the house for at least 30 yrs when repairs or painting was required.Doc was an incredibly smart and caring person,never saw either Mrs Kahn or Doc without a smile or a kind greeting,the thing about Doc is he had an intelligent response to literally any question I would throw at him.Gonna is ya Doc,luv u much,Fallon!
