Lon Hocker Obituary

Hocker, Lon, Jr. passed away on Wednesday, January 31st, at the age of 96 at his home in Woods Hole, Massa-chusetts. Born in St. Louis, he was a resident of Clayton for many years, practiced law as a part-ner in Hocker, Goodwin & Mac-Greevey, and was the Republi-can nominee for Governor of Missouri in 1956 and for U.S. Senator from Missouri in 1960. In World War II he served in the Pacific as commanding offi-cer of the U.S.S. LST 889. In 1955 he was appointed Chief Hearings Counsel, U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Constitutional Rights, which worked to undo the erosion of individual consti-tutional rights in the McCarthy era. Mr. Hocker also was Director, Secretary, and President of the St. Louis Bar Association; Mem-ber of the Board of Governors of the Missouri Bar; Vice-Chairman of the Insurance Section of the American Bar Association; and first Missouri Fellow, Regent and President of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He was admitted to the Bars of: Mis-souri and Massachusetts, U.S. Eastern District of Missouri, Dis-trict of Massachusetts, U.S. Courts of Appeal for Eighth, Seventh, First, and District of Columbia Circuits, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He served as Secretary and General Counsel and President of the Missouri Insurance Company; Secretary and General Counsel of the St. Louis Globe Democrat; Secretary and General Counsel of Chrom-Craft Corporation; and director of the following: St. Louis Ame-rican Baseball League (St. Louis Browns), Russell, Burdsall & Ward Nut and Bolt Co., Green-leaf Manufacturing Co., Inter-style Inc., Chippewa Trust Co., Bayless Building Materials Co., two private schools, several charities, and the National Mu-seum of Transport. He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Esther Sands Hocker; by a daughter, Priscilla Hocker Claman, of Weston, Mas-sachusetts; by a son, Lon Hocker III, of Hilo, Hawaii; and by five grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.Services: A Memorial Service will be held at the Church of the Messiah (Episcopal), 22 Church Street, Woods Hole, MA, 508-548-2145 on Saturday, Feb-ruary 10th at 4 p.m.. Relatives and friends kindly invited. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands Chapter, 286 South Street, Hyannis MA 02601, 866-762-1928.
