Michael Hasenstab Obituary

Hasenstab, Michael K. of St. Louis, Missouri, passed away Friday, August 25, 2017 at St. Louis University Hospital. Michael was born on Nov. 5, 1951 in Belleville, Illinois to Earl and Dorothy Hasenstab. He spent his formative years attending St. Luke's Grade School and Althoff High School where he developed an interest in fine arts. He earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees at SIU Edwardsville where he majored in English and the Teaching of Writing. He then taught at SIUE until his retirement in 2016. Michael was an avid swimmer who taught swimming to both adults and children. He took pleasure in gardening, traveling, estate sale hunting, dancing, listening to music, and especially hosting parties at his home. His friends will never forget his sense of humor. He was preceded in death by his father, Earl Hasenstab. He is survived by his wife Cheryl Roth Hasenstab, his mother, Dorothy Hasenstab, and three siblings, Nick, Dianne, and Tim. During his life, Michael wrote a great deal of poetry, several short stories, and a brilliant novel, and he gave a number of very successful readings of his work at various venues in Illinois and St. Louis. Michael was a stranger to none and will be missed by many. Services: A memorial is set for Saturday, September 9, at Hoffmeister Colonial Mortuary, 6464 Chippewa St., St. Louis, Missouri. Visitation begins at 2:00 p.m. followed by the memorial at 3:00 p.m. Flowers are welcome. Condolences may be offered at www.hoffmeistercolonial.com
