Norma Jean Downey was a beautiful, caring soul who worked to make the world a better place and always leaned toward promoting equity and humane values in society. She was my friend. Norma was an activist and very progressive. And in 2016, I was honored to have her as Treasurer of my Missouri State Representative campaign. When we would get together to go over campaign issues she would always speak to me about her prime concern which was advancing public education. Norma was a teacher and knew what she was talking about - she would give me MNEA materials to read and would discuss issues going on with Parkway School District and about securing state funding for public schools. She would lovingly suggest, "I know you're very strong on the environment, Byron, but talk about education as well." I did. After my race, we would get together to have dinner at Friendship Village where she lived and she knew the politics of everyone there - Norma would give me the lay of the land so-to-speak because she cared about who she was speaking with in order to move the needle as best she could. Norma was working within her community to affect change; and to me, that's the best thing to do and finest quality to exhibit. Explicitly, and unabashedly moving the world around her to higher ground. Doing what you can. Never giving up. We love you Norma, you will be sorely missed, you were a treasure and gave me hope.

Norma Jean was a special person who was dedicated to her family and friends but equally so to the community. She was a strong advocate for her husband as well as the values she felt for all. She will be remembered.
